The 2015 Miss Universe mix-up or the Miss Universe crowning mix-up is a crowning controversy that received worldwide media attention due to Steve Harvey's mistake when announcing the name of the winner.[1] When announcing the winner, Harvey announced Ariadna Gutiérrez, Miss Colombia, as the winner. After she was crowned, Harvey stepped in and said he had to apologize. He said that Miss Colombia was instead the first runner-up and Miss Philippines was the actual winner. He later stated that he had been confused when reading the winner's name because both names were on the card and he only noticed the "1st" by Miss Colombia's name.[2]

The three finalists, Which was Olivia Jordan of the United States, Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia and Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines were waiting for the final announcement of the winner. Steve Harvey correctly announced Olivia Jordan as the second runner-up of the pageant. Harvey later announced Colombia as the winner. Few minutes later, while Gutierrez was blowing kisses and taking her first walk as the new Miss Universe. Harvey came back from backstag.e and said that he made a mistake and corrected that Philippines is the real winner. Paulina Vega has to transfer the crown to Pia Wurtzbach.[3]

Harvey apologized on his Twitter on what happened and both Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia acted graciously in the aftermath.[4]

Miss Australia, Monika Radulovic edit

On the 22nd of December 2015, Radulovic spoke to Australian morning show Sunsrise on what happened during the mix-up. In a video also posted on Tuesday, December 22, Monika, who made it to the Top 5 of the competition, said: "The scandal has really overridden everything, it was unbelievable. I still really can't believe that it happened."

Radulovic said that the most of the contestants already knew about the mistake before Harvey corrected himself because of the prompter.[5]

Miss Montenegro Maja Čukić edit

A video posted by CCPI on YouTube showing the contestants' reactions were gathered. Including Montenegro's representative. The reactions and actions of Čukić made Filipino netizens mad, after the organization saw the issue involving the Miss Universe Montenegro Organization. The organization issued a public apology for the candidate's unintentional actions.[6]

In 2016, Montenegro withdrew from the contest and never competed since 2016.

Miss Singapore, Lisa Marie White edit

On Christmas Day in 2015. White was interviewed on what happened during the mix-up. She believed that the mix-uo meant "nobody really won". She stated that she didn't managed to approached both Gutierrez and Wurtzbach because their were a lot of people between the two.[7]

Miss United States (USA), Olivia Jordan edit

Jordan became beloved by the Filipinos after her respectful actions to Wurtzbach. She was said to be very happy for Pia.[citation needed]

Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj made a meme about the mix-up and said that she's proud of Wurtzbach winning the title.[8]

Shamcey Supsup edit

Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup reacted to the mix-up while she is proud on Wurtzbach's win.[9] On an interview with Boy Abunda, Supsup stated the reason why most of the Latinas approached Gutierrez instead of congratulating Wurtzbach was because of language grouping or continental grouping.

Mary Jean Lastimosa edit

Miss Universe 2014 semi-finalist Lastimosa is also proud on Wurtzbach's victory but sad on the mix-up that happened during the coronation night.[citation needed]
