Year 5000[Year 5000 1] (Y5k), is a folk, alt-country, and acoustic punk band formed in Bend, Oregon in 1996 by Mat Probasco.

Career

edit

Originally recording on reel-to-reel and cassette four-track in 1997, Probasco was joined by Ritchie Young of Loch Lomond (band) (drums, keys, vocals) to record their debut LP Secret Album (Note Farm Records 1999) in Olympia, Washington.

Distribution through K Records helped boost the unconventional album's popularity and in 1999 Joel D. Holly (bass, vocals, keys) joined for live shows in and throughout the Pacific Northwest.

In 2000, the group teamed with producer Rob Orberdorfer to record Season of the Witch (Note Farm Records 2001). Probasco grew disenchanted with live shows and in 2001 Young left the group to join several touring bands. Orberdorfer took over drums on the album, as did Brian Gumpert and Rob Duncan. Season of the Witch was released Sept. 09, 2001, the night before Probasco left the United States for nearly two years in the Caribbean.

Returning in 2003 to Portland Oregon, Probasco began recording with poet/songwriter Trevino Brings Plenty and guitarist Scott Jackson. The EP The Sudden Sleep was recorded during this peroid.
