I’m a college student who lives in Seattle. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan. I graduated from high school in Japan and I moved to Seattle a few months ago to study at college. I have been to Cambodia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the Philippines. When I was 17 years old I went to high school in New Zealand for about 8 months and I lived with host family over there. I like traveling around my country and historical places in Japan, and cooking. I am interested in other cultures and different customs, so I would like to travel around the world after finishing my study at college or university and learn them. I use Wikipedia for projects in my English class at college to learn how to use and improve Wikipedia.

Article Critique edit

I visited the Maiko page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on:its narrow information, its lack of information about their origin and jobs, and its lack of citation.

Narrow information edit

There are only four or less sentences for each headings or sub-headings. There is some information about Maiko but they are mainly about appearance of Maiko and there aren’t much about other information of them. This page mainly describes hair-style and kimono which Maiko wear. Though hair-styles are well-explained, everything written in the context is Japanese words and there are only four pictures of the hair-style or kimono described on the page, which might make readers, who are not Japanese, confused.

Origin and Jobs edit

The sentences written about origin and jobs are extremely short and general. At the bottom of the page, there is a sentence that says “At night they go out to work,” and I came up with a question, where they go and what they do. As I read through, I thought I could get the point about Maiko, but there aren’t any explanations of Maiko’s purpose to work, daily schedule, etc.

Citation edit

There is no citation on the bottom and there is a maintenance template which says this article needs help. Everything written on the page is unsourced, so the article is not reliable. I looked for Maiko 舞妓 (Japanese version on Wikipedia) and I noticed that even Japanese version does not cite any sources. If the information on the page is from any books, the name of the books could be written as sources.

Summary edit

I would say this page is weak. This page needs to be developed by more volunteer editors and needs wider and more sourced information about Maiko itself. The article on the page does not include any citation, so it is needed to find grounded information for this article and make the article have deeper information than making it wider, and that I believe would bring readers clearer and better understanding of Maiko.
