Grand Prize Winners edit
Originally called Grand Prize of Mannheim from 1962 to 1994 it was later known as International Independent Award of Mannheim-Heidelberg from 1994 to 1998, given every year for a feature film and a documentary. Renamed Cinematic Art Award Mannheim-Heidelberg in 1999, renamed again Film Art Award Mannheim-Heidelberg in 2001. These were replaced by Grand Prize Mannheim-Heidelberg in 2002, given to a single winner, later renamed Newcomer of the Year, Grand Newcomer Award and then International Newcomer Award. In 2019 the award, normally bestowed by the jury, was voted on by audience.

Nastro d'Argento for Best Director edit
Until 2016 the award was literally called Director of the Best Film (regista del miglior film) and was given to directors responsible for films deemed best achievements of the year, so it effectively functioned as an accolade awarding best films. In 2017 the system was reformed and the category was split into separate Best Director (miglior regista) and Best Film (miglior film) awards.
Before the reform, the award was given ex-aequo to films/directors who shared wins four times, in 1946, 1948, 1963, and 1984. After the reform, the 2022 Best Director award, won by Mario Martone, was credited to two of his films released over the preceding year.
