Acceptable values for y:

  • "remaining disputed until the arrival of Bolsheviks."
  • "remaining disputed for the next two years."
  • "remaining disputed until Bolsheviks took over the region."

Alternatively, to avoid repetition, we could reword the previous subclause:

  • Nagorno-Karabakh emerged as a disputed region when Armenia and Azerbaijan gained independence in 1918, remaining so until the arrival of Bolsheviks/until Bolsheviks took over the region/for the next two years.

Acceptable values for x:

  • granted to
