Greek museums

The two pages are much more informative than when they were robostubs. I agree they do not look like a little curio collection in the back of a souvenir shop, as are some "museums" and "art galleries" I have seen on travels. Thanks for the work which has greatly improved them by describing the holdings. I see that the sources are just webpages, mostly anonymous, which look like tourism promotion, even if put out by the ministry of culture. One of those tourism promotion sites listed Fodor's guide to Greece as a source, and it would be more authoritative Wikipedia unfortunately blocks me from linking to the book. Hm, well it is still interesting I pulled the figures for 2951 communes fromthe site you mentioned, interestingly the names soemtimes are in the form xxxx c. / yyyyyy . I am slightly puzzled beacause

• 389 Husasău de Tinca c. / Biharhosszúaszó község (BH)
• 390 Ineu c. / Köröskisjenő község (BH)

but at Ineu, Bihor we say "Ineu is a commune in Bihor County, northwestern Romania with a population of 3,954 people which includes Botean, Husasău de Criş and Ineu villages. "

Rekha

A few days ago I watched again a 2001 film called Lajja. She played a villager. I was shocked by how she was gang-raped and burnt alive in the film (you can see this scene here). Her acting was simply great. Now I find myself creating a film article on Ghar (film) in which she also was gang-raped.

I am back! I probably will be editing a lot in the next couple weeks (nothing to do during the day at the moment!) and then disappearing for another adventure somewhere else. I saw your infobox actually and was inspired to add some stuff to house some photos I have of minor monasteries in the region. (I have some photos of the monasteries in Kaya and Skiu - see Skiu-Kaya - that I will add soon. maybe the one in Skiu will deserve its own article eventually because it was built in something like the 11th century but for now I can't find much about it.) I will probably be adding a few more stubs on marginally notable hamlets along my trekking route. Schools

I looked at Categoría:Provincia de Almería and, yup, it's a good example of the work that still needs to be done. I think that creating redlinks on transwiki project pages will be helpful. I'd really like to see wikipedia develop partnerships with schools, worldwide, and that the partnerships would be the catalyst for translations of pages such as those in WikiProject_Intertranswiki/Spanish/Culture/Bot_Run and Almeria and etc. The redlinks on WikiProject_Intertranswiki/Spanish/Culture/Bot_Run make for a starting place, especially for the newby editor who doesn't know where to start. If every English language class in every high school in Spain worked on one of those redlinked articles, bringing it to Start Class, it'd be much more than bravo. And, of course, the translation can't stop with creating the en wiki article. The article also needs to be created on all the foo wikis. This definitely takes more than 2, or 20, or 200, or 2000 or even 20000 editors. So we have to nurture those that are already creating content, and mentor the newbies. What I think we also need to do is mobilize thousands of people worldwide. I think schools, in partnership with wikipedia, are a big part of the solution. The question is, how can wikipedia reach out and make those school alliances? Maybe start with school librarians? --Rosiestep (talk) 22:33, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Ladakhi monasteries

Hi! Wow you have been busy! BTW - what is the DYK box for Likir doing on my page? It only belongs on yours - I just helped a bit - you started it and did most of the work (and, I presume, nominated it for DYK). So, I think I should remove it - but many thanks anyway. I appreciate your work getting the Ladakhi monasteries written up - it's a great thing to do and will, I am sure, wipe out many years of sin for you (and what wonderful photos you have tracked down - a gold star for your forehead!) One small thing - I think we should avoid referring to Red Hat sect monasteries as it really is just a term used by people who don't know as it can refer to either Nyingma, Sakya, or Kagyu establishments. If in doubt - let me know and I will check through my fairly extensive book collection. Also, the monasteries of Lahaul and Spiti and Zanskar are also usually closely related to those in neighbouring Ladakh. I think I have covered most of the major ones in Lahaul and Spiti (largely because I had photos of most of them which I had taken myself). But, perhaps I will have a look at Zanskar monasteries when I get a chance (if you don't keep me too, too busy!) and then ask you if you can chase up some copyright-free photos on the net (you are obviously very skilled at this). And what's all this about Halloween? Do you celebrate it in Wales? I thought it was, these days, mainly a Nth American thing which started in Scotland - but I will do some research. (See some picts at the Pal.Rem. site.) Historically, architecturally, the shrine is MUCH more important than the railway-station...(thought the station is also interesting!) According to my DYK-check it qualifies; if so, I´ll leave it to you, as usual! ..But the intro must be changed...it does nof "fit" with the "body" of the work..When Morris say it was depopulated in April -48, then that must have been just the first time. As in so many cases, the villagers obviously filtered back when the fighting died down. A DYK-hook could possibly involve the fact that the Canada Park now covers part of Dayr Ayyub´s land? Whaw, I´ll do what I can on Nuris, Zikrin and Al-Ja'una. As for Al-Ja'una: it was started by new user who was only on WP for a few days back in May. Beside Al-Ja'una and Al-Nabi Yusha', he (she?) also started a couple of other articles; all completely filled up with OR. I´ve cleaned up Al-Nabi Yusha' roughly (thought *a lot* more should be written about it; take a look at the magnificant shrine-pictures on PalRem-site.) As for Al-Ja'una: I moved all the OR to the talk -page not long ago (which is what I normally do..) ...but now I see that you have moved it back?? Could I ask you to remove it, again? The Oliphant-find is great...and I´ll add more on the events in 1948-49: villagers were expelled several times. Heh; nope; read my comment on the top of the page; Talk:Al-Ja'una. It is just my "modus operandi" ..over these past couple of years I have seen it many times: new users, who have a very limited knowledge of English, who start one ..or maximum two, of these 1948 articles. Often with detailed information; I somehow presume they, or their family come from the village. So I think it is a pity to nuke it completely...I normally just move it to the talk-page. Kullu

Thanks for all the wonderful notes on my Talk page. I hardly know where to start! But first, I assume this Kulu is the well-known Kullu Valley (this article certainly needs a lot of work!!!) which runs like a narrow highway from the north Indian plains deep into the Himalayan ranges via Mandi, Kullu town and Manali, Himachal Pradesh. It is a most magnificent place and the main road from the plains of India to Ladakh (since all the unrest in Kashmir has limited use of the Srinigar-Leh highway) travels through the valley and over the beautiful but very treacherous Rohtang Pass (which my wife Jo and I almost died on once while crossing it on foot) to Lahaul and then, through the Lahaul Valley to Ladakh. It runs roughly parallel to the Spiti Valley. Looking at all these articles now, I can see how much needs to be done to get them up to speed. I have only occasionally visited them - mostly to up load photos of mine - but (if I can spare the time - I should really try to improve them.

It is the valley from which emerges the Beas River (which, further downstream, when it starts cutting across the plains, was the furthest point reached by Alexander the Great and his men). When we lived high above Dharamsala (1979-81) we looked down over the Beas river from our home (see the river in the painting "View from Dharamkote" here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Hallett). But back to the subject at hand. I am not sure whether Kullu was ever really part of Tibetan territory (though the next valley to the east, Spiti, certainly was). However, it is sort of the last bit of India proper (geographically and culturally) and, as such, has for many centuries been a meeting place for Indians, Ladakhis and Tibetans, and an important centre of trade.

Well, I better cut this short - I have to write a letter in a hurry and then my 4 year old granddaughter is coming for a visit and I will be fully occupied for the rest of the day!!!! Just before I leave, though, I should tell you that I have Francke's "Antiquities of Indian Tibet" in two volumes and his earlier "History of Ladakh" and, although they may be somewhat dated, they remain the main sources in English for Ladakhi history and are a treasure house of all sorts of arcane information. I also have a copy of Janet Rizvi's excellent work, "Ladakh: Crossroad of High Asia" which, of course, is much more up-to-date and indispensable. Ladakh and its history

Hi again! I decided the best place to begin was tidying up the History of Ladakh page which was a real mess, though containing some good but unreferenced material. I have just made a little start on it (only on the very first few paras. This led me somewhat atray to the fascinating Korean Buddhist monk, Heyecho in Korean, Hui Chao in Chinese. He visited India and Central Asia for 4 years and returned on foot through Karashahr to China in 729 CE. The fragment of his account was found in Dunhuang by Paul Pelliot and has recently been published (I have just ordered a copy from Amazon.com). I have just added a few notes to the article on Lhachen Gyalpo. I have just had a quick look at Francke and it seems to me to be a bit difficult to say who was the "fifth king of Ladakh" as there was competition between the early kings and some ruled one part and some ruled another at various times. Hi again

Sorry to be so slow to respond to your message... I don't really know of any other notable monasteries. There are probably tons and tons and tons more but I doubt many have much coverage. The monastery in Kaya for instance only has one monk that lives there and only part time - I don't think that's notable. Maybe one day the Skiu monastery will have an article but I think it will be a long time before anyone digs up sources... Today I may do some photo uploading and incorporation into articles, we'll see. Ever since getting back from India a week ago I have been sick with a fever. And yesterday I got a weird rash all over my body. The doctor I went to see doesn't know what's wrong. This morning my fever seems to be gone so that's encouraging at least! Ah, strange tropical illnesses.... So I mostly have been just laying around feeling sorry for myself and sleeping all the time. :( Hopefully it will clear up soon - otherwise I have to go see an infectious disease specialist! ugh... I got top = 39.91, bottom = 25.82, left = 77.61, right = 103.47 using coordinates for a couple border trisections (nepal and bhutan) with google maps. What you are using is probably close enough. The two points that I used were 30.197206°N 81.034478°E / 30.197206; 81.034478 and 27.327338°N 88.921275°E / 27.327338; 88.921275, which are nearly the exact border intersections according to google maps. These were the two points for which it was very easy to identify pixel locations. As you said, the projections can cause problems away from these points. And again, it's probably close enough given the resolution of the resulting image you are trying to produce. Plastikspork _―Œ^(talk) 18:05, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

I listened to the Adams twice in a row, and honestly (blasphemy though it may be), I think I prefer other readings to Kremer's. The beauty of that movement, when done properly, is that it's almost like a moto perpetuo - it shouldn't flag at all, not even at the end. It should be almost breathless all the way through. Self-diagnosis

Hi Blofeld, I'm finally getting better! My fever has been gone for over two days now, and the rash is starting to go down too. Based on my med school friend talking to doctors she works with, combined with my reading the wikipedia pages they recommend, I'm pretty sure I had dengue fever! I may still go to the doctor again because the other doctors recommended I be tested for typhoid and a couple other things to be sure. Thanks for the effort. However, in the case of the Amhara, Oromia, Somali & SNNP Regions I think it would be best to organize the woreda templates into groups by Zones, rather than the Regions, due to the large number of woredas. And to complicate matters even further, (1) The SNNPR has split both its Zones & woredas into new ones, which I am still working on how to properly present; & (2) the Gambela Region has reorganized its structures totally. (Talk about headaches!) But I do appreciate the effort you have been putting into this.

I completely agree with your comment. It is pretty much a story told through different worlds. Do you think then Priyanka was a desrving winner of the best actress award? But I'm glad you liked it. I can understand now you prefer the more realistic films.

Now what would I give you? There are so many available films! I think Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is a good film, but it would probably be way too Indian for your taste. Here are the films I can suggest from the existing YT videos:

• Dil Se - one of my all-time favourite films. It's a very authentic film about a young guy who falls for a female terrorist. It's also Zinta's debut.
• Fiza - same here, one of my all-time favourite. Amazing film about a sister whose brother disappeared during the riots and she starts looking for him.
• Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - a great entertainment - romantic love story with the great couple SRK-Kajol.
• Mission Kashmir - a brilliant war film.
• Dil Chahta Hai - a very modern and realistic film about Indian youth.
• Jab We Met - a romantic comedy about one heartbroken man and a crazy girl. Charming film with great performances.
• Life in a... Metro - a modern depiction of life in the urban Mumbai.
• Black - well you must have heard about it - a powerful film partly based on Hellen Keler's life story.
• Rock On!! - about a rock band, their break, reunion and all that. Was very acclaimed.
• A Wednesday - a brilliant film about the proceedings of one wednesday no one really knows of.
• Jodhaa Akbar - a historical account of Akbar the great and his wife Jodhaa. Good, but too long and exhausting.
• Chandni Bar - a dark film about the life of one young woman in Mumbai. Fantastic performance by the super talented Tabu. The film is a bit disturbing.
• Don - SRK in a dual role. Stylish action film - you may like it.
• Woh Lamhe - a film based on the relationship of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Parveen Babi. It is about an actress who suffers from some mental problem.

No not at all - I agree. But in case of girls like Mallika, they want to be outspoken to make themselves look confident and they try to be controversial to attain popularity. In the case of, say, Shilpa or Zinta, it's more honest. Zinta in particular is honest when she needs to be. If it's a court case, she'll be honest. She is outspoken and frank when she has to raise her voice for social causes, and when someone bitches on her, she knows how to answer back properly, and I fully endorse that. For some reason, Kareena Kapoor is widely known to be as a celebrity with a very unpleasant off-screen persona. Many consider her to be a snob and a veryy arrogant girl, because, in most cases, when she says something about someone, it's negative and for no particular reason. For instance, she had problems with Bipasha Basu while shooting Ajnabee. She refused the role in Kal Ho Naa Ho because the fee was too low for her (and it's a role every oung actress would die for). Later when Bipasha's boyfriend John Abraham said he thought Rani Mukerji is sexier than Kareena, Kareena started dissing him. She later said she does not consider Priyanka and Bipasha actresses, that John Abraham is expressionless, that she could have done better a role of Aishwarya Rai and so on. That's more of bitchiness. Yeh in fact after the success of Kal Ho Naa Ho she went all over to say that she was the first choice for the role, and Zinta said she was shocked to see her ignoring her completely in different events. In the case of Priyanka, the both acted in a film called Aitraaz and Priyanka stole the show with her supporting role. So here you see where it comes from. Sanjay Leela Bhansali says that he wanted to cast her in a film and later he regretted and according to him, she said she did not care because he does not know how to make a film (he said it on Koffee with Karan, don't know if it's true though). Look what I found two days ago. Famous critic and filmmaker Khalid Mohamed bashed Kareena's attitude so strongly: Here you have it. That's probably due to me, actually. I tied up the servers for ten minutes when I changed my name during my RfA, and you've got a lot more edits than I did when I made that change. Tibet

Hi, Himalayan Explorer. I tried my best to present my arguments at the talk page and dicuss with others. However my edits were continously undone by several editors. Because of WP:3RR, I can never gain this "battle" since they are 3 (with 3x3 undo rights). That's not true regarding the flag. It is a consensus to use Kosovo with a footnote only, to overcome statements like Kosovo/Serbia, Serbia/Kosovo. I think using the flag is okay because it's under the authority of the Republic of Kosovo while the note explains it's current political status. Thank you. kedadial 22:22, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, I would say that the ip address of this person (Serbia) has something to do with this, but I had actually considered not using a flag before adding them because I know the area is of dispute and often flags have strong political/national feeling which we don't want for a neutral encyclopedia. Monastery templates

Great work - they look fabulous! I like the idea of the Jammu & Kashmir template (and we will need one for Himachal Pradesh as well). I will do my best to insert them where appropriate - though I may not have much free time for a while because I just received word yesterday that my book (Through the Jade Gate to Rome) will be available on Amazon.com and other on-line bookstores within 2 weeks and at some big U.S. book distributors within 3 weeks. Whoopee!!!! You can't imagine how excited I am after 30 years work on it!

In the meantime I have to send out thousands of targeted email flyers announcing its availability (and, hopefully, drumming up significant sales).

I was working on some articles yesterday and have had a problem with the monastery template in the article on Stongde Monastery and don't know how to fix it. Would you have time to take a look at it and see if you can figure out what I am doing wrong? One thing is that I don't have the full coordinates and just stuck in the degrees (no minutes or seconds or decimal fractions of degrees - but I don't think this is causing the problem. Images and ecuador

Hi there, thanks for the barnstar! I recently bought a plane ticket to Ecuador and I'll be there for seven weeks starting this Sunday!! So I figured I should do some learning. Hopefully I can get good photos while I'm there to add. I'm not really sure what my plan for Ecuador is yet. I think I might live in Quito for a month and do some volunteering. That would also be good for my budget! I need to make sure I have enough money to last till my job starts... I'll try to upload those photos soon. Someone wrote a tool for batch uploading CC photos from flickr which would speed things up[1] but I can't figure out how to download/use it so I sent him a message. Flickr seems to be down at the moment, so I can't confirm, but I think I've uploaded about 1200 pictures to my flickrstream[2]. There's still a few more to upload but the order of my uploading got confused so it will be a little time-consuming to figure out what's left. Most probably are not useful for wikipedia (friends I met, popular tourist attractions that already have photos, towns I forgot the name of, villages too small to have articles) but some will be. I just need to go through them and fix the licensing on the useful ones. (I don't like putting CC as a default because I have an irrational fear that that will cause photos of me to spread through the internet like wildfire.) Your monastery infobox looks very nice. I didn't get around to going to Zanskar, no. I only had 9 days in Ladakh and I spent several trekking, several in Leh, and one in a village I was invited to by the family of a monk I met while I was trekking. That was really fun. If Flickr ever starts working you should check out the set called something like "with Jingme's family" for some good photos. They dressed me up in Ladakhi clothes and made me dance with them. While I was in India I stayed with four Indian families - two I met there, two from couchsurfing. Now that I think about it, it was a very good variety - a Buddhist family in Ladakh, a Sikh family in Punjab, a Jain family in Jaipur, and a Hindu family in Baroda. Indian people were ridiculously hospitable - people were always inviting me to meals... I even went to a wedding that people in the street invited me to! Selos

Haven't we covered this already? {{Infobox Russian inhabited locality}} is good for any kinds of inhabited localities, including rural localities (I assume you meant those by "rural settlements"? I'm asking this because "rural settlements" proper are municipal formations, not localities. Semantics, semantics :)). So, if you want to add an infobox to an article about a selo, go right ahead! There's even a copy-paste model available now just for that case.

As for the infobox adding, it's not going anywhere. I've been on vacation for almost two weeks since after we last talked, and all this past week I am only slowly catching up, both in real life and on-wiki. Ah, OK. But I'd say it's not a very good idea. It will work for something like Chukotka or Kamchatka, where the number of selos in a district is rarely more than a dozen or two, but it will absolutely not work for most other federal subjects. Consider, for example, Novosibirsk Oblast, which has, on average, fifty rural localities per district—and that's not even an extreme case (in fact, Novosibirsk's values are around the median). On the extreme (but not atypical) end of the range, Tver Oblast's districts have, on average, over 250 rural localities. A footer in such cases would be way overloaded and quite useless as a navigational aide. I don't want them neglected either; it's just that we don't even have more high-profile stuff to organize them around. Ideally, we would have articles on all the administrative districts and then possibly about the selsoviets and/or municipal rural settlements (depending on the structure of each federal subject; they are all different). The latter two would be an ideal place to group the rural localities under, but it makes no sense to go about creating selsoviet articles (on which very, very, very scant information is available) when most of the district ones are still red. OK, turns out Chukotka is already coded in. The reason why the map didn't show up was this. Another problem was this. The remaining problem is that the eastern bound is still coded as 191°. It works for places in the eastern hemisphere (like Anadyr), but I don't know what needs to be done to make it work for Uelen as well. samoa

Hi, thanks for the advice. I have 'joined' and logged myself in Samoa project, but there's no one else active there - and the wp project userbox doesn't work. I don't know how to fix it. Re. the word 'master' as in 'master tattooist' = the reason is because that is the most true interpretation of the word 'tufuga ta tatau' into the English language. This term is used in books. There are many tattooists, but the 'tufuga' level is someone who is a master and expert of the art, like 'master navigators.' They are a special elite group of people. This is like the words 'high chief' or 'paramount chief' which does not = 'king' in the English language. Or there are many cooks but not many chefs. There is a huge difference in cultural status and rank of these terms in Samoan culture. Again, like the term fa'afafine does not equal 'gay' in the English language. Wikipedia is supposed to be putting together the world's knowledge, not just a European POV - and I think that's a good thing. Losing cultural truth to fit in with the English language, doesn't have to stick, i'm sure, if it means providing information that is misleading and culturally out of context when using the English language. It is an encyclopaedia which means being correct. We don't have to duplicate the weaknesses in the 'real' world with digital knowledge. I'm sure this dialogue is a very important one. Mozambique

Hi Himalayan/Blofeld, nice new name. That book looks great, lots of info in there for new articles and for expansion of History of Mozambique. I am a little busy at the moment (I am working on a rewrite of Anglo-Ashanti wars and the War of the Golden Stool which are in a bit of a mess and have an upcoming RFA, amongst more boring real-life things) but I would love to move onto Mozambique once I am free. Sofala sounds like an interesting article to work on anyway. I don't really focus on one geographical area but edit whatever looks interesting though I do like African articles as Wikipedia seems to have a deficiency in this area (and often articles on wars as there are so many sources for these).
