Edward ist eine kleine, alte Lokomotive, die schon lange nicht mehr gearbeitet hat. Eines Tages entscheidet sich der Lokomotivführer, aus Mitleid, mit ihm zu fahren. Am nächsten Tag schiebt er Gordon und seinen Güterzug Gordons Berg hinauf und erhält zur Belohnung eine neue Bemalung.

Henry, die grüne Lokomotive, befürchtet, dass der Regen seine Bemalung beschädigt. Eines Tages bleibt er in einem Tunnel stehen und weigert sich herauszukommen. Nach mehreren Versuchen, ihn zu bewegen, entscheidet sich der Dicke Kontrolleur Henry im Tunnel einzumauern.

Henry war eine lange Zeit im Tunnel eingemauert und wünscht sich, er wäre nicht so unklug gewesen. Eines Tages wird Gordons Sicherheitsventil beschädigt und er kann den Schnellzug nicht weiter ziehen. Edward ist die einzige verfügbare Lokomotive und mit Henries Hilfe kann er den Zug weiter schieben.

Thomas ist vom Rangieren gelangweilt, und wünscht sich einen Zug ziehen zu können. Als Henry krank ist, erhält er seine Chance. Jedoch lässt er den Zug im Bahnhof zurück und ernet Gelächter.

Thomas is fed up with shunting coaches in the yard, so Edward agrees to swap jobs the next day. However, Edward's train consists of trucks, which love to play tricks, especially on an engine not used to them, like Thomas.

Beim Rangieren sieht Thomas einige seltsame Wagen namens „Der Unfall-Zug″. Als James, die rote Lokomotive, einen Unfall hat, kommt Thomas ihm mit diesen Kränen zu Hilfe. Der Dicke Kontroleur ist zufrieden mit Thomas und gibt ihm seine eigene Nebenstrecke.

James, after having an accident on his first day, is now trying to be really useful. He does however cause trouble, when he wets the Fat Controller's new top hat with steam, and then bumps coaches so hard that one of their brakes fail.

James is in trouble with the Fat Controller. He has been confined to the shed for a long time, but is released to pull trucks. He works hard, and then takes a goods train up Gordon's Hill. The trucks misbehave, but James doesn't give up.

James, after proving himself useful, is to shunt coaches in the yard. Gordon, boasting about himself as usual, says he knows the right Express line by instinct. James ignores him, and continues working. Later, James sees Gordon puff into the station quietly and sadly. He finds out that Gordon was switched the wrong way and got lost.

Thomas is very busy working on his branch line with Annie and Clarabel. But one morning Henry is late, and this makes Thomas cross. When Henry finally arrives, Thomas insults him, and hurries away. Because he is in such a rush, however, he leaves the guard behind.

Thomas liebt seine Strecke. Als er Angler sieht will er ebenfalls angeln, obwohl er es den anderen Lokomotiven nach nicht kann. Am nächsten Tag ist der Wasserturm außer Betrieb und sein Lokomotivführer füllt Flußwasser in Thomas' Tank. Als es Thomas daraufhin schlecht geht, müssen der Dicke Kontrolleur und Thomas' Lokomotivführer und Heizer alle Fische aus Thomas heraus angeln.

Thomas meets Terence the Tractor, and soon says his wheels are ugly. Terence explains that they're caterpillar tracks, and he can go "anywhere", which comes in handy during the winter when Thomas doesn't use his snowplough...

Thomas stops at a signal near the bus depot, and meets a bus named Bertie. Bertie reminds Thomas of the time he took his passengers after he got stuck in the snow and Terence came to pull him out, and Thomas gets jealous. He challenges Bertie to a race.

Gordon, James, and Henry are upset that they have more work to do. Now that Thomas is gone, they have to shunt their own coaches. Because of always having to turn around to shunt, Gordon and James soon have trouble on the turntable.

Gordon, James and Henry are causing trouble for the Fat Controller. They're going on strike for being made to shunt, and refuse to work at all. The Fat Controller tells them off, and goes to get Edward so he can work in the yard again. But Edward can't manage alone, so he finds a new engine called Percy and shuts the big engines up. In the end, Thomas and Edward run the main line while Percy runs the branch line.

Percy, the new engine, is working hard, and Gordon, James and Henry have been let out of the shed after promising to be good. Percy, Edward and Thomas go and play on Thomas' branch line. Edward then goes to the Quarry leaving Percy alone, He doesn't mind that a bit. However, he forgets Edward's warning about going on the main line, and is almost caught in a collision with Gordon and the Express.

Henry isn't feeling well because his firebox is too small, and he can't make enough steam. Sometimes he doesn't even have enough power to pull a train. The Fat Controller addresses the problem, and comes to a conclusion that Henry needs Welsh coal.

Henry, now having new Welsh Coal and feeling better, is chosen to pull the 'Flying Kipper', a train of fish vans to deliver around Sodor. He's happy, and soon sets off for the snowy countryside in the early morning. He's having a good time, but some points that go to the main line are frozen to a siding and he misreads a signal that was supposed to say danger, but was pushed down by snow.

Henry, now having his new shape, tends to whistle loudly and happily. Gordon despises this, and lectures him about it. Henry's miserable after hearing this, but cheers up later when Gordon's whistle jams 'on', and he won't stop whistling! Next day, Henry experiences troubles of his own, when boys throw stones at him from a bridge, breaking his coaches' windows, and annoying him, his crew and the passengers. To teach them a lesson Henry "Sneezes" at the boys covering them in smoke ash.

Toby is a tram engine who works on his own little line. He is happy there with his coach Henrietta, but is quickly running out of work, being replaced by cars, lorries and buses. Soon, he is only carrying a few passengers and shunting few trucks.

Every day Thomas travels down a part of his line, which runs beside a road. Usually the friendly policeman at the crossing lets him pass, but a new policeman has taken over, and does not take kindly to Thomas whistling to him in a friendly way. Things take a turn for the worse when the policeman books Thomas as a lawbreaker for not having a cowcatcher or sideplates. When The Fat Controller hears about it, he buys Toby who brings Henrietta with him.

Toby ist neu bei der Eisenbahn und wird oft von James wegen seinem und Henrietta's Aussehen geärgert. Bis er eines Tages von Güterwagen in Teerwaggons geschoben wird und seine eigene Bemalung beschmutzt wird.

Gordon gibt damit an, no nie entgleist zu sein. Eines Morgens soll er zu seinem Missfallen einen Güterzug ziehen. Bei dem Versuch die Drehscheibe zu blockieren, rollt er in einen Teich und kann erst nachts geborgen werden.

Thomas teases Gordon about the time he fell in a ditch, much to the horror of Annie and Clarabel. Thomas doesn't care a bit, and is then sent to work at the Mines. He notices a danger board that says "Danger, Engines Must Not Pass This Board" near the tracks, goes past it to prove there's no danger, and ends up falling down the mine instead of going past it.

Auf der Insel Sodor ist Weihnachten. All the engines are busy with passengers and parcels, especially Thomas and Toby. Thomas likes it when he passes Mrs. Kyndley's house while working, and she always waves to him. Thomas says it wouldn't be Christmas without Mrs. Kyndley, and then goes to the shed to discuss to the other engines about throwing a Christmas party for her.

Gordon and Henry tease Edward after some cows break part of his train away. However, it's Edward who has the last laugh when the two run into Bluebell the cow.

Thomas' fireman isn't able to come in to work one day and Bertie agrees to take his passengers. Edward, unaware of the change of plan, leaves before Bertie arrives.

At the scrapyard, Edward meets a traction engine called Trevor, who is due to be broken up, despite being in good condition. Edward is determined to save him, and finds the perfect person to do so.

After Edward makes him late, James makes rude comments about him, claiming him to be nothing but a load of "Old Iron". Not long afterwards, however, two boys meddle with his controls and render him a runaway, until Edward saves him.

Trevor is bored of working in the vicarige orchard, so Edward agrees to take him to help Thomas at the harbour. Slowly but surely, Thomas gains a respect for the traction engine, and eventually promises Trevor that he can help him again when the time comes.

Percy enjoys playing tricks on the other engines, but goes too far one day, getting James into trouble with the Fat Controller. He and Gordon decide to pay Percy out with the help of a signal...

The Fat Controller buys an engine named Montague (nicknamed Duck) to help out an overworked Percy. The big engines are rude to him, and start ordering him about. Duck and Percy decide to take matters into their own hands (or wheels) and deal with the engines themselves.

While at work on the new harbour, Percy meets Harold, a helicopter who calls the railway "slow, not much use, and quite out of date". Percy is determined to prove him wrong, and his chance comes on the way to the Wharf.

Thomas isn't feeling well and has to go to the works. Soon, he comes back, but with a small problem: his brakes aren't always working properly. This proves disastrous when the fireman forgets to tighten them properly while waiting for Henry's train, and Thomas puffs away.

One day at the Harbour Percy teases Henry about being afraid of water referring to the time he refused to come out of the tunnel in case the rain ruined his paint. However, on another day at the Harbour, Percy soon gets what he deserves when he ends up chin first in the water after foolishly persuading some trucks to push him past the same Danger sign Thomas ignored.

A diesel engine named Diesel arrives on the island and Duck is given the task of showing him what to do. Diesel boasts that his kind know everything, so Duck leaves him to shunt some trucks alone, with disastrous results...

Diesel is still cross with Duck, believing that he was to blame for the trucks being rude to him. In order to get revenge he decides to tell lies about Duck to the trucks, which insult the big engines at the same time.

During his stay with Edward, Duck finds himself of the receiving end of a runaway, but bravely manages to control them, despite crashing into a barber's shop.

The viaduct across the main line is being repaired. This makes Thomas cross with the other engines, and Bertie cross with Thomas. But when Thomas comes to the rescue after Bertie breaks down, the two decide being late isn't such a bad thing.

Donald and Douglas are twin tender engines whom the Fat Controller had bought from Scotland to help with the railway, although he had only ordered one engine. He intends to send one of them back, and a spiteful brake van doesn't help the twins at all.

Heavy snow has fallen on Sodor, but Donald and Douglas are used to it, using their snowploughs to clear the line. After they help Henry from a snowdrift, the other engines are determined to help them out.

Thomas's driver tells him that he could almost manage running the branch line without him. He is only joking, but Thomas doesn't realise this, and pays the price dearly after trying to move by himself the next day and crashing straight into the stationmaster's house at the end of the line. The accident leaves him severely damaged, and the Fat Controller Tells him that a diesel will replace him while he is away.

Daisy, a diesel railcar, has been bought to help Percy and Toby whilst Thomas is at the works. However, she proves to be very stubborn and even refuses to do the chores she hates.

Toby offers to swap jobs with Percy so he can have a rest from taking the milk Daisy keeps leaving behind. Unfortunately, Percy has never worked at the quarry before, and the trucks are quick to take advantage of this.

Bill & Ben are twin brothers who work at the China Clay Pits. One day, they are aghast when they discover that their trucks have gone missing. Down the line, they cause great problems and difficulty with a diesel called Boco, who they believe stole the trucks. Confusion regains until Edward explains everything.

Gordon believes that branch lines, such as Edward's, are vulgar, and that the Fat Controller would never approve of him running it. However, he ends up there due to a case of mistaken identity involving a lady's hat, and Bill and Ben are waiting...

Some tourists are visiting the Island of Sodor, and Edward is due to take them to meet Bill and Ben. On the journey back, however, one of his crank pins, which hold his side rods on, breaks off. Despite this, Edward presses on, and gets the tourists back safely.

Thomas doesn't believe Percy when the little engine tells him about a ghost his driver saw the previous night (which turns out to be a pretend one on TV). Percy wants to pay Thomas out, and a cartful of lime left on the track just might be able to help...

Percy is still teasing Thomas about the ghost incident. Thomas hits back by calling him a "Green caterpillar with red stripes". Things go wrong for the little engine soon afterwards after getting hit by a crate of treacle, then getting stuck on a hill, windswept with hay.

It's Christmas time and all the engines are hard at work getting ready for the Christmas Party. Thomas is sent to collect the Christmas tree, but gets stuck in a huge snowdrift on the way back. After the engines complain of Thomas being late, the Fat Controller explains what has happened. Donald and Douglas help him out, and as a reward, all the engines enjoy a huge Christmas Party, with Father Christmas as a special guest!
