Too much? edit

Slightly long title in Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2014-05-07/Featured_content but I've been trying to either have something amusing or at least a quote, and... that's the best I've come up with. WikiCup 2014 April newsletter edit

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's   Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's   Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's   ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included   Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and   Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from   Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from   Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to   Czar (submissions) and   Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. WT:WikiCup edit

So, the entire talk page has devolved into attacks on featured pictures. Great. I'm going to sleep on it, but if this continues, and the WikiCup judges don't start laying the smackdown, I'm withdrawing. The WikiCup is meant to be a friendly competition. What kind of smackdown are you looking for? Kicking people out for criticizing the amount of points FPs get? I think both sides are putting out legitimate, if sometimes drama-laden, thoughts that we should take into account for next year. Signpost edit

Is there any chance we could get the Signpost advertised a bit more? We've been getting a bit under a thousand viewers to each FC article, according to stats.grok.se, and that's awfully low for the amount of work that FC takes. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:42, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Any suggestions? I've tweeted/Facebooked about FC twice this week and do so on most weeks, but the current pagination (subpages of a Wikipedia namespace page, with no URL indication of what's in the article and the default page title being like Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-05-14/Featured content, not "On the rocks") means that we are ranked very low on Google, etc. We also rarely get linked to by outside news organizations, even when we're one of the first ones on a story (eg Wiki-PR...), which is something that rankles me. I've previously thought about moving it all to an external site, but I fear that we would lose our core readers—a Wikizine-style death. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 23:40, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Indeed. And it is an open question why the denizens on main-page talk have such an objection to linking to the SP from the MP (when you look at all the detritus they do link to from the MP). (Talk-page stalker) Giving you a data-point of one. I regularly click on Portal:Featured content which can be reached from any page by clicking "Featured content" in the navigation box near the top left corner. I do it precisely to learn about newly featured content. The Signpost overview is much more appetizing, of course, and I will use that from now on. I didn't know it existed. Sure, I've often browsed through and read The Signpost, but not that regularly or systematically, and I'm afraid I was usually drawn toward the more dramatic bits. So: Why not prominently add a link to Portal:Featured content? That way it would be two clicks away from every page! ---Sluzzelin talk 15:34, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Something for the Signpost edit

I've prepared some material in recognition of User:Casliber's achievment of 100 featured articles – Wikipedia's second FA centurion. The text is here; you may need to cut it a bit if you're short of space. Can I ask you to pick it up – I've forgottem how to transfer it directly to Signpost. Let's see... I don't think we should put this into the Featured Content report as it's too late: Grus already appeared in it this week. Instead, let's make this a standalone, and link to it from the FC report.
There are two things that the interview needs, in my opinion: 1. A link to a list of the 100 featured articles. Ideally, I'd say make a two- or three-column table and list them all in the report (We can grab them from Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations, though we'd need to reverse the order, which is a pain). 2. Images, but I can do that once the page is live and the list is ready. I'll use them to highlight a few more featured articles. Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:32, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
It is intended as a standalone – see what I did for Wehwalt's FE century a few months ago. I don't think we need prepare a table – a link to Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations should be enough, the reverse order doesn't matter. Well, it's Wednesday, and Ed's been having connection issues, so, @Brianboulton:, if you're willing, I'd say we make up a page for it, and work up the aesthetics there. I'm not quite sure about the coloured text, but we can play around with it a bit and try to get it as near-as-possible to ready before Ed gets on, so that it can go out right away.
