Hey Ed. I've been doing some work to finish up USS Oklahoma (BB-37) to prep it for GA but I'm a bit rusty having been out of the process for a few years. Hey, Ed! Good to see you back around the place. I think that there is more information out there, especially on the Pearl Harbor attack, but that its current state is good enough for GA. Phister et al is the big source that I'm aware of (and own!), and you've cited them extensively. On the design section, do you have Friedman's US Battleships? If not, I do and would be happy to add some info to the article. I should have time to do a more detailed source check in the next few days, and add the info in the next few weeks. Metadata on the March

From the days of hard-copy liner notes on music albums, metadata have stood outside a piece or file, while adding to understanding of where it comes from, and some of what needs to be appreciated about its content. In the GLAM sector, the accumulation of accurate metadata for objects is key to the mission of an institution, and its presentation in cataloguing.

Today Wikipedia turns 17, with worlds still to conquer. Zooming out from the individual GLAM object to the ontology in which it is set, one such world becomes apparent: GLAMs use custom ontologies, and those introduce massive incompatibilities. From a recent article by sadads, we quote the observation that "vocabularies needed for many collections, topics and intellectual spaces defy the expectations of the larger professional communities." A job for the encyclopedist, certainly. But the data-minded Wikimedian has the advantages of Wikidata, starting with its multilingual data, and facility with aliases. The controlled vocabulary — sometimes referred to as a "thesaurus" as term of art — simplifies search: if a "spade" must be called that, rather than "shovel", it is easier to find all spade references. That control comes at a cost.

Case studies in that article show what can lie ahead. The schema crosswalk, in jargon, is a potential answer to the GLAM Babel of proliferating and expanding vocabularies. Even if you have no interest in Wikidata as such, simply vocabularies V and W, if both V and W are matched to Wikidata, then a "crosswalk" arises from term v in V to w in W, whenever v and w both match to the same item d in Wikidata.

For metadata mobility, match to Wikidata. It's apparently that simple: infrastructure requirements have turned out, so far, to be challenges that can be met.

@Sturmvogel 66: Took a look and did a bunch of copyediting. I'd love to get off G&D as the main source there, but I'm not seeing much more than a crazy number of counterfactual/alternate history forum posts. It doesn't look like Mark Stille even tried to cover them in Imperial Japanese Navy Battleships 1941-45. (This implies that Warship vol. 3 has a bit, but I'm not convinced there's much there given the table of contents.) Should we add any info on Japan's strategic considerations and later war situation, even if it doesn't actually mention the A-150s? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 02:52, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
I have that volume of Warship and it's not much use to us. I don't recall seeing anything significant on the A-150s in the issues of Contributions to the History of IJN Warships that I have, but I'll take another look when I'm less full of good beer. I'm not sure if we should expand the strategic discussion because it's obvious to us, but maybe not so much to ordinary readers. Hard to tell, but maybe we submit it to FAC and see if of those guys think that more coverage is necessary.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 03:28, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
