A mobile phone charger (also called a cell phone charger and cell phone charger and cell phone power adapter) is a charging device for mobile phones, used to replenish the stored energy in a mobile phone battery.

Description edit

Modern mobile phones generally are sold with a mobile phone charger, a plug-in AC adapter with an AC plug on one end and a DC connector on the other end. The charger regulates the voltage to some convenient intermediate voltage, almost always 5 Vdc. Inside the mobile phone, battery charger circuits regulate the voltage and the current in order to charge the mobile phone battery.[1]

Such phone chargers are not to be confused with "universal cell phone battery chargers" intended to charge isolated cell phone batteries, separated from the mobile phone.[2]

History edit

In 2011, there were more than 30 different kinds of cellular phone charger.[3]

Not only does each company have unique plugs and cords incompatible with other companies, but often successive models are incompatible with the previous model from the same company. This was widely viewed as unnecessary, annoying, wasteful, and polluting.[3][4][5]

As of 2016, both smartphones and laptops can be charged from the same USB charging point. Most smartphones support Qualcomm Quick Charge, while laptops that support charging over USB use USB Power Delivery. Neither one is really better than the other.[6]
