The Battle of Five Armies, also known as the Battle of Erebor, was the climax battle of The Quest of Erebor fought in Dale and on the slopes of Erebor. The battle arouse in the power vacuum following the death of Smaug by the hands of Bard the Bowman. The large dwarfen treasure gathered in Erebor attracted the attention of several factions in and around the Wild, ultimately leading to a violent clash between two alliances of five separate factions and other belligerents. The battle saw heavy fighting both on and around the slopes of Erebor, with the advantage shifting many times. The goblin and warg alliance was ultimately routed after Bolg was killed by Beorn, and the majority of the goblins where hunted down by elves and eagles during the following days. Dáin II Ironfoot became the new King under the Mountain, a position left vacant by Thorin Oakenshields demise, and Bard reconstituted the Kingdom of Dale. Due to the extremely high casualties suffered on the goblin side the battle saw the end to goblin and warg supremacy in the Rhovanion and the Misty Mountains for at least 50 years.
