User:Taiwantaffy/Dutch Formosa/Villages of Dutch Formosa

The villages of Dutch Formosa were the major settlements in the colonial state of Dutch Formosa, which existed between 1624 and 1662. The authority of the Dutch did not spread over the whole island; the mountains and most of the east coast remained outside the pale throughout the history of the colony. The area of Dutch control was expanded in two major waves, one in 1635–36 in the south after the first Pacification Campaign, and the second in 1642–43 after the Ouster of the Spanish from the north of Taiwan.

{{[[Template:Dutch Formosa village |Dutch Formosa village ]]}} Soulang was one of the first villages to come under Dutch control, in 1626, because it was close to the Dutch base at Tayouan. Daniel Gravius was stationed here as a missionary from 1647–51 and wrote several texts related to the Siraya language of the inhabitants.[1] He also introduced the skill of ploughing with draft animals to the villagers.[1]
