I have looked up many entries on the web and also sorted some papers. As previously noted Rosamond Rolleston has tried to state Mary Rolleston's side in the dispute with her brother over the estate. It is sad that her opinion is now recorded as fact in so many places that it will be hard to correct. There are so many obvious errors in her book that it needs an errata added. It is easy to see that Joseph was not a general practitioner in Sherborne in 1851 but he could have been one in London 10 years earlier. His move to New Zealand was well planned, but may have been a little hurried so as to travel with his sister-in law's family. He bought Linwood well before his wedding. The wedding would have been necessary for travelling on the ship. There was no scandal as if there had been it would have followed him to New Zealand and he could not have then been a "pillar of the Church". Guise Brittan was involved in land dealings but the index shows only 3 properties in Joseph’s name and in fact RS301 was bought by his son Frank who subdivided both it and Linwood and also his farm at Kelsie. It is clear that the eldest son, Joe, was not simple. I suspect he was an academic or absent-minded professor. It seems that he did not get on with his step-mother. I will continue some research both on line and deciphering family papers, but I doubt if I will get to publish anything. Syne41 (talk) 23:26, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
