Elections to Brighton and Hove City Council on the south coast of England were held on ?? May 2003. The whole council, a unitary authority, is elected every four years; in 2003, as in the whole of Sussex, new ward boundaries were introduced. The council was reduced from 78 members (26 wards each returning 3 members) to 54: in most of the city, wards of around 7000 electors ere replaced with larger wards of up to 11000, while in some areas (mostly in Hove and Portslade but also in the eastern area of Woodingdean) the former wards were retained, with boundary adjustments where necessary, but reduced to two councillors. <--- The Conservative Party replaced the Labour Party as the largest party on the council. However, the council remained under "no overall control" (i.e., no absolute majority for any party): the Conservatives won 26 out of the 54 seats in the city. This result was to some extent in line with the general pattern of results throughout England that day, with Conservatives gaining seats at the expense of Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The Green Party increased its number of seats from 6 to 12. ---> Summary description of the result and change from 1999 goes here. Labour lost overall majority but remained the largest party.
