27 Births of Mahavir

Mahavira (Mahāvīra), also known as Vardhamāna, was the twenty-fourth Tirthankara (ford maker) of Jainism. Jain texts discuss twenty-six births of Mahavira before his incarnation as a Tirthankara.

List of 27 Births

1. Nayasāra : A village headman, having wood cutting business. Once in jungle while having Lunch, he longed for some guest. To his luck some lost Jain Monks were passing through that part, whom he served with food, water etc. The Monks preached him about the righteous way of life. Following the 7 principles, preserving right belief he secured samyaktva (partial enlightenment or right belief) and passed his remaining life righteously.
2. A Dev :Birth in the 1st Celestial World (Heaven) called Saudharma for period of a palyopama (Measurement of time, inestimably a long period)
3. Prince Marichi: Grandson of the first Tirthankara Rishabhdev and Son of King Bharata}. Upon listening sermon of Rishbhadev, Marichi chose to take religious vow and became monk. Unable tobear the hardships of Monk life, he abandoned the strict rules of monkhood and started following his own set of comfortable rules, but he stayed with the group of Monks. In some of the sermons he came to know that he will going to be future Tirthankara, and developed pride in the mind. (Which resulted in Nich Gotra Karma, future birth in lower caste) Out of some hurting from fellow monks, he chose to set up his own sect. He died Fasting and had next birth as Dev.
