Medical Guidewire

A medical guidewire is a medical device very commonly used in endovascular surgury and other similar minimally-invasive medical interventions. They are typically introduced into the vasculature using the Seldinger Technique at the Femoral artery, however transradial designs are becoming very common, as a radial artery approach typically introduces less risk and often better access to coronary and carotid arteries.

Design

Guidewires, despite being very small and unremarkable in appearance, are complex devices. Since there is no room (often less than 0.014" diameter) for complex mechanisms to provide specific traits; composite materials, specialized coatings, and special, high precision manufacturing techniques are used in the engineering of these devices.

Since many endovascular deliverables such as catheters and stent delivery systems are not designed for navigation, another device is necessary to guide them to the location of disease, typically found in torutuous vasculature such as the coronary arteries. Therefore, guidewires must be simultaneously stiff and flexible
