Political Family Background

Nick Begich, Jr. comes from a political family which includes his father Nicholas Joseph "Nick" Begich, Sr., who was a Democratic Party member of the United States House of Representatives from Alaska. Congressman Nick Begich disappeared in a 1972 plane crash along with Congressman Hale Boggs of Louisiana when the plane disappeared during a flight from Anchorage to Juneau. His brother is Mark Begich (born 1962) an American Democratic Party politician and the current mayor of Anchorage, Alaska, who has appeared in national news media promoting economically efficient ways of reducing energy consumption to combat global warming. Mark Begich also officially announced his candidacy for reelection on April 21, 2008 and will likely face incumbent U.S. Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK).[1] His mother Pegge Begich was also a political activist
