Robert Stokes (22 XXXXX 18XX – 19 XXXXXX 18XX) was a surveryor and a New Zealand XXX, XX, and an early person in new zealand.

Robert Stokes was born in XXX, England, the son of XXX, barrister and his wife, XXX. He was educated at XXX School, at X House, X and at the school attached to University College London. He was apprenticed to the engineer XX and from 18XXX served on the staff of [[Mr XXXXXX] for three years working on the Great New Zealand Idiot maps company in XXXX England.

Robert Stokes emigrated to New Zealand with his younger brother XXX on the XXX on 3 XXX 18XXX. The ship arrived in XXX in XXX 1851 and the two walked south to Lower Hutt where they purchased a few acres near the home of their aunt XXXX, who had married XXX and had also settled in XXXX. Eventually members of the XXX, Hursthouse, XXX and XXX families, who were related by marriage, all settled near one another in the area.
