Antonia (sometimes called Antonia Cretica)[1] a Roman woman of the late Republican period who was the wife of Publius Vatinius. She was likely the daughter of Marcus Antonius Creticus and sister of Roman general and statsman Mark Antony.
Biography
editChildhood
editAntonia was the daughter of Marcus Antonius Creticus. She may have been the daughter of his first wife Numitoria or his second Julia.[2] Julia was the mother of her three brothers Marcus Antonius (better known as the triumvir Mark Antony), Gaius Antonius and Lucius Antonius.
It has been speculated that she may have been the Antonia who was kidnapped by pirates and held for ransom while her father was a pirate hunter[3][4] which caused such public distress that Cicero decided appeal to the senate that Pompey be appointed new pirate exterminator.[5] But in is thought by many that it was actually her aunt Antonia that was the one kidnapped as a child.
Marriage
editAntonia married politician Publius Vatinius.[6] Upon her wedding she moved her images of her father and grandfather to her new husband's home. Although, Cicero joked that it was more of a "prison".[7][8] It has been speculated that it was due to the marriage that Vatinius earned a fast rising career at the hands of Julius Caesar, the cousin of Julia.[9] She was still married at the time of her husband's trial in 56 BC[10] but by 45 BC Cicero mentions that Vatinius was married to a woman named Pompeia.[11]
