The Lomax family is a fictional family in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks.

Creation and casting edit

In February 2006, Kieron Richardson made his first appearance as Ste Hay, a love interest for Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies). Executive producer David Hanson introduced the character for a seven episode guest stint.[1] Hanson's successor, Bryan Kirkwood, reintroduced the character for another guest stint, before offering Richardson a year's contract in 2007.[1] Ste's adoptive daughter, Leah Barnes (Magic Hurst, Jessica Croft-Lane, Elà-May Demircan), was introduced to the soap in February 2007,[citation needed] while Ste's son, Lucas Hay (Jude Hawley, Reuben Thwaites, William Hall), was introduced in April 2009.[citation needed]

In 2013, Kirkwood became aware that Ste had no on-screen family and decided to introduce his family to the soap.[2] Kirkwood reintroduced Ste's mother Pauline Hay (Jane Hogarth) as part of the storyline. Pauline has terminal cancer and asks Ste to euthanise her.[3] Kirkwood stated that Ste and Pauline's story is "just the start of a massive journey" for Ste.[2] He confirmed that Ste's sisters would be introduced to the series, which he was excited about.[2] Kirkwood told Daniel Kilkelly of entertainment website Digital Spy that he wanted to introduce "an equally-strong female force to become the engine of Hollyoaks for the next few years."[2]

The character of Danny Lomax was announced on 25 June 2013. Danny is introduced as a new teacher at Hollyoaks High School and a love interest for John Paul McQueen (James Sutton).[3] Kilkelly reported that there are "a lot more skeletons in Danny's closet, which could turn the worlds of a number of Hollyoaks residents upside down".[3] On 1 July 2013, it was announced that Stephen Billington had been cast in the role of Danny and that he would first appear in July.[4] On 16 August 2013, it was revealed that Danny is Ste's biological father. Billington was told about the twist when he joined the show.[5] Three days later, Lizzie Roper's casting as Sam Lomax, Danny's wife, was announced.[6] Roper's casting was not announced before transmission as to surprise viewers. Roper expressed her delight at joining the cast of Hollyoaks and felt "lucky" to play Sam.[6] Kilkelly reported that Sam would be a regular character and confirmed that Danny and Sam are the parents of Ste's sisters.[6]

It was confirmed on 25 June 2013 that actress Kirsty-Leigh Porter would join the show's cast as a regular character. Kirkwood called Porter "a terrific signing for Hollyoaks" and stated that her character would create mayhem for one character.[7] On 17 September 2013, the casting and character details of Danny and Sam's daughters and Ste's sisters was announced. Porter was cast as eldest sister Leela Lomax, Jessica Ellis portrays Tegan Lomax, and Ruby O'Donnell joined the cast as youngest sister Peri Lomax.[8] The sisters first appear in October.[8] Shortly after she arrives, Tegan gives birth to Rose Lomax, despite not being aware that she is pregnant.[8]

Six months after the sisters' first appearance, in April 2014, it was announced that Cameron Moore would join the soap as regular character Cameron Campbell, a love interest for Leela with "a dark and complex past".[9] A show spokesperson stated that Cameron would have a "dangerous" backstory that would have ramifications for other characters.[9] A month later, it was confirmed that Cameron is Leela's ex-boyfriend and Peri's father.[10]

The Lomax family edit

Ste Hay, portrayed by Kieron Richardson, first appears in the episode broadcast on 17 February 2006.

Danny Lomax edit

Danny Lomax, portrayed by Stephen Billington, first appears in the episode broadcast on 8 July 2013. Danny is the head of the family, the husband of Sam and the father of Ste, Leela and Tegan.[5][8] Danny is a drama teacher at the local high school, Hollyoaks High School.[4] He is described as smart, eloquent and held in high respect by the official Hollyoaks website, who also said that Danny is popular with many people, but especially his students.[11] Billington described Danny as "charming, fun, caring, complex and secretive".[12] He stated that although Danny is a "complex" character, he is very likeable.[12] Over a month after his arrival, Danny is revealed to be Ste's father. Billington was excited about portraying the story and looked forward to working with Richardson.[5] Danny departed in an unpublicised twist on 6 August 2014. Billington was written out of the series and filmed his departure in June 2014. Danny was killed-off following a car accident.[13]

Sam Lomax edit

Sam Lomax, portrayed by Lizzie Roper, first appears in the episode broadcast on 20 August 2013.[6] Sam is the wife of Danny and the mother of Leela and Tegan.[8] Sam is a police officer and described as compassionate, energetic and someone who works hard by the official Hollyoaks website, who billed her as "Hollyoaks' very own Superwoman!"[14] Roper compared Sam to "a lioness" where her family is concerned and said that Sam has "a heart of gold" and is unafraid.[6] Describing Sam, Roper commented, "one moment she's fun and feisty starting food fights, the next she's facing up to gangsters and doing everything she can to bring them to justice."[6] Roper was written out of the series in 2014 after one year. She filmed her final scenes in June and Sam departs in the episode broadcast on 6 August 2014. Sam was killed-off after a car accident as part of an unpublicised twist.[15]

Peri Lomax edit

Peri Lomax, portrayed by Ruby O'Donnell, first appears in the episode broadcast on 4 October 2013.[16] Peri is the daughter of Leela and Cameron, although this was not revealed until May 2014 and Peri is raised by Danny and Sam as their child.[17] Peri is described as cheery, wise and "the only voice of reason" in the Lomax family by the official Hollyoaks website, who also stated that Peri sometimes acts "like a typical teenage girl".[18] O'Donnell's mother thought that she bears a resemblance to Peri and felt that O'Donnell suited the Lomax family.[16] When Peri discovers the truth about Leela being her mother, she begins to resent Leela. Porter explained that "things won't run smoothly" for mother and daughter.[17] In November 2014, it was announced that Peri would become pregnant in her first issue-led storyline. Writers devised the storyline as part of the show's emphasis on safe sex. Kirkwood wanted to encourage "thoughtful debate" as a result of the story.[19]
