Plot

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke to Terri Schwartz of http://ca.ign.com and said the following about the plot of the film: "For some reason people sometimes talked about how we're not doing an origin story, we're bored of origin stories. I think people are bored of origin stories they've seen before or origin stories that are overly familiar," Feige explained. "Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn't we do that? That was sort of always the plan. How you tell that origin, perhaps there are ways to twist it or play with that, but for the most part, it's a gift when the comics have something with such clarity of story and of character. That doesn't always happen in the comics, and when it does, you use it."[1]

Development

edit

In October 2014, it was announced that the Doctor Strange film will be hitting theatres on November 4, 2016, with Scott Derrickson signed on to direct, Benedict Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange, and Kevin Feige producing.[5][2]

In an August 2015 interview, Doctor Strange cinematographer Ben Davis talked a little bit about the film’s visual style. “It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie," said Davis. "Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”[6]

Pre-production

edit

On August 15, 2015 at Disney's D23 Expo, Kevin Feige surprised those attending the panel with a concept art sizzle reel narrated by the film's director Scott Derrickson. Strange was shown wearing both a red cloak and a more classic outfit and Baron Mordo had his traditional goatee and was in black and grey tones. The concept art has not been revealed to the general public and it is unknown if it ever will.[7]

Filming

edit

In September 2014, it was reported that Marvel Studios was in final negotiations to shoot Doctor Strange at Pinewood's Shepperton Studios in the U.K. Marvel has a history of shooting films at this location, such as Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.[8]

In June 2015, Kevin Feige revealed that Doctor Strange would begin filming in London in November 2015, but there was no mention of specific locations.[9]
