Welcome!

…to my user page! I'm a male specimen of the species homo wikipædiacus. I live in a small 3000-soul community a few metres west of my country's capital, Wien. I've recently started my civilian service at Vienna's MA 15 Social Centre for the 12th, 13th and 23rd District in October 2005, after having finished my school career with the Matura in June 2005. It will last until September 2006; I'll start studying Technical Mathematics at the TU Wien subsequently, together with either Russistics or Sinology at the Hauptuniversität. While I'm doing rather boring and tedious office work, though, I should have enough free time during work to do a bit more for Wikipedia than I did while I still went to school (or than I will be able to once I attend university, I'm afraid).

Unsorted Thoughts on Wikipedia

I'm rather unhappy with the wikipedia policy of "if English name and official name clash, use English name". In my humble opinion, its principle amounts to de facto disinformation of the reader, who is lead to believe that the common name is also the correct name. Therefore I support this naming convention proposal and the following page moves:

  • Czech RepublicCzechia (Official short name which has not yet caught on in general usage – in part owing to the reluctance of newspapers and official publications to use something not yet widely known, which results in not too many people knowing about the short name, due to which newspapers and official publications... you get the idea.)
  • East TimorTimor-Leste (Case is similar to Côte d'Ivoire.)
  • VietnamViet Nam (A minor issue, but still important; after all, Viet Nam uses exactly this orthography in the United Nations and other organizations.)

Naturally, I also support the use of ß, Þ, ó, ä and similar characters in article titles.

Est omnino difficile iudicare inclusionis meritum cuiusdam rei in encyclopædia cum ratio sciendi quid populi referat incerta sit, sed nihilominus aliquid encyclopædiam dedecet

It is generally difficult to judge the worthiness of a particular topic for inclusion in an encyclopedia considering that there is no certain way to know what interests people, but some topics nevertheless are not fit for an encyclopedia.

This motto reflects the desire of these Wikipedians to be reluctant, but not entirely unwilling, to remove articles from Wikipedia.
