Elder Neglect

edit

According to the article “Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions”, in the United States, an estimated 2.1 million senior citizens are victims of various forms of abuse and neglect. It can be anything from physically abusing them to neglecting them by not helping them to the bathroom, then leaving them dirty. Many of the elderly citizens who deal with elder neglect often having feelings of entrapment, and they can even fear for their lives. An example that shows that senior citizens fear for their lives is Anne, an 85-year-old woman who lost her husband in 2010. Then, she began living with her daughter who began by calling her names, and then she stopped helping her mother around the house and even slapped Anne (“Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions”). In a quote, the interviewer states, “In addition to feeling frightened and isolated, Agnes feels trapped and worthless” (“Elder Abuse and Neglect: In Search of Solutions”). Many people like Anne have lost their houses and cannot go thought the daily tasks without help from someone, which can make things worse for the person, but those people who are in critical care go to nursing homes. Most nursing homes are great for the elderly, but even nursing homes sometime neglect there patients. So, one must think what can they do? How do they get help? Is there a way to stop elder neglect? In order to stop elder neglect, people that see the neglect happening must speak up and be eyewitnesses, which will ultimately stop this problem. --Lherishen (talk) 01:34, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[1]
