Steve Appel a.k.a King Curly edit
Steve Appel, born 1966 in Canberra, Australia, began writing music and performing with his elder brother Greg Appel in a short lived musical outfit in Sydney in the late 1990s called ‘Hammerhead’. The band included Sarah Peat, James Cruikshank and Kathy Weymss.
This was followed by another legendary band with brother Greg named ‘One-Head-Jet’ which also featured at various times, brother David Appel, Wayne Macalister, Sarah Peat, Brendan Gallagher, Peter Timmerman and Duncan Kimble. They released two records of original songs by Steve and Greg :‘Snickedy Palace’ and ‘Chains Of Water’.
Steve then started writing/performing as his own band under the name ‘King Curly’ in 1999 with Greg Walker /j Walker, Jonathon Nix and Elmo Reed, releasing a self titled album followed by ‘Familyman’.
From 2005 to 2015 band personnel included Zoe Hauptmann and John Hibbard with casual service also from Evan Mannell, Aaron Flower, Ben Hauptman and James Hauptmann.
Since 2006 the King Curly repertoire has included many songwriting collaborations between Steve’s friend and writer Dan Creighton.
Steve currently records and performs King Curly as a 3 piece band around Steve Grieve s guitar and Johnny Graffham s pedal steel.
King Curly has played most of Australia’s major music festivals and toured Europe and the USA. Also touring with Paul Kelly, k.d. Lang, and The Cat Empire.
