Biography

Childhood

Raoul Albert La Roche was born (February 23, 1889) and grew up in Basel (Switzerland) in a bourgeois family, very close to the world of art.

Professional carreer in France

In 1912, at the age of 23, he moved to Paris (France) to work for the "Banque suisse et française" (BSF) who will become in 1917 the "Crédit commercial de France". He will make his career there until his retirement in 1954.

In 1918, Raoul Albert La Roche met Le Corbusier and he was seduced by the purism painting of which he then laid the foundations.

In 1922, on the occasion of a trip to Venice and Vicenza with Le Corbusier, Raoul Albert La Roche plans to have a villa built by his friend. This project will become the "Villa della Rocca"[2] in Paris, at the "Square du Docteur-Blanche". The villa will be built in joint ownership with that of the brother of Le Corbusier, the violinist Albert Jeanneret and will house his collections of paintings, paintings by Picasso[3], Braque[4], Fernand Léger[5]. Raoul Albert La Roche will donate this villa to Le Corbusier to install his foundation.

Death

Roual Albert La Roche died on 15 June 1965 in Basel. He bequeathed one third of his collections to the musée du Louvre, another third to his hometown (Basel) and the last third to the fondation Le Corbusier.[6]
