American International University, Gambia American International University (AIU) West Africa is a private university. The new campus for students admitted in 2011 to School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy is located on Kairaba Avenue in The Gambia and was opened on January 31, 2011.

Government approved in the Republic of Guinea & Republic of The Gambia, AIU West Africa is the first university in Africa to provide medical program based on a curriculum modeled after major US medical schools. Currently there are many schools in the Caribbean that are 4 or 6 year teaching institutions offering medical degrees along with a basic sciences curriculum modeled after professional schools in the United States of America. AIUWA is the first institution to extend this curriculum modeled after major American schools to Gambia, Africa.

The foundation of American International University West Africa (AIUWA) arose from the agreement dated 1998 with Government of Guinea to establish a hospital in Conakry, Republic of Guinea. American Hospital, known as Centre Medical International was established in Gbessia, Conakry and inaugurated by H.E. Lansana Conte, The President of Republic of Guinea on November 16, 1998.

The provision of the 1998 Agreement for setting up an institution of higher medical education attached to Centre Medical International was the basis for the creation of AIUWA, whose charter was approved in 2007 by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Republic of Guinea (Decree No: 2007/1224/ME/MESRS/CAB).

The Government of The Gambia has approved American International University West Africa to be the first private university in the country. Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Government of The Gambia through an accord signed in August 2010 approved the University for establishing School of Medicine, School of Dentistry and School of Pharmacy as an institution of Higher Education. Modern classes and laboratories and hi-tech teaching infrastructure are prepared for assuring outstanding education and living conditions to students.

The students and graduates of American International University School of Medicine shall be eligible to participate in the United States Medical Licensing Examination & receive ECFMG certification. The ECFMG certification requires all graduates to have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (both sections), submit a final transcript, and provide a copy of the graduate's diploma for verification. Once ECFMG certification has been granted the graduates shall be eligible for Postgraduate Medical education (Residency Training) in the United States. Graduates shall later be eligible for licensure in respective states.
