Orion is a 1985 novel by science fiction author Ben Bova. It is the first in the Orion series. It follows the life of John O'Ryan the protagonist as he tries to rationalize his existence and understand his abilties until his well ordered life is turned upside down when he discovers his purpose and creator.
Plot summary
editJohn O'Ryan is a marketing executive at Continental Electronics Corporation, a multinational firm that manufactures lasers and other high-technology equipment. He is a loner who usually keeps to himself. He however, sees that he has special abilities which he is unable to explain such as been able to learn anything in no time at all. He goes for lunch one day and then sees a young lady called Aretha. At this same restaurant he sees two men who seem to be glaring at each other. While trying to understand, a bomb is tossed into the restaurant but his quick instincts are able to save Aretha although she still sustains some minor injuries. She is then taken to the hospital. He then tries to reach her at the hospital and is successful at first but on the second try he discovers she has been abducted by the dark man he saw at the restaurant. He quickly pursues.
