13 Reasons Why is an OVERHYPED and OVERRATED American mystery teen drama web television series based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and adapted by Brian Yorkey for Netflix. The series revolves around a high school student, Clay Jensen, and his friend Hannah Baker, a girl who commits suicide as revenge ploy against those that 'did her wrong'
Yorkey and Diana Son serve as showrunners on the series. The first season (and should've been the only season) consists of thirteen episodes. Instead of using the show as way to bring awareness to suicide, it shows graphic scenes that can trigger a viewer. Even though professionals said it would be that the showrunners refrained from such scenes because they can hurt those that are mentally ill rather than helping them. It disgustingly romanticizes suicide and portrays it as a choice for people who are suicidal.
1. Suicide should never be a choice 2. Suicide is nothing to romanticize/ and should never be done out of revenge 3. You shouldn't always blame others, not even yourself for what you're going through 4. The scene in episode 13, season 2, was WAY too much. 5. Showrunners need to learn how to portray mental illness realistically rather than portraying it in such a way where they have graphic scenes for 'shock value' in order to gain views.
P.S. I know that some people may relate to Hannah Baker, I'm not trying to discredit your mental illness. I'm only pointing out things that people have seen throughout the series.
