The Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge

The Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge is a group founded for the promotion and preservation of Scottish culture[1]. The society was founded in 1976 and has since grown up to support sub-sections including: The Baton Rouge Caledonian Pipes and Drums, the Baton Rouge Scottish Country Dancers, the Caledonian Claymore Club, and a Scottish cultural study group. The group is active throughout Louisiana, promoting awareness and education of Scottish culture through organization of and participation in Burns Suppers, Kirkings of the Tartan, heritage festivals, Tartan Day celebrations, Highland games, parades, and many other events throughout the year, in addition to each section’s weekly classes or monthly meetings.

Baton Rouge Caledonian Pipes and Drums

Formed in 1976 with the founding of the society, The Baton Rouge Caledonian Pipes and Drums is the oldest pipe band in the Baton Rouge area. A Grade V pipe band and a member of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA), the band competes and hosts competitions around the Southeast United States. Baton Rouge Caledonian regularly performs in Louisiana parades, museums, Kirkings of the Tartan, International Heritage Festivals, Highland games, among other events. The band is under Pipe Major Stanley Masinter and holds weekly practice at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge Scottish Country Dancers

Formed in 1989, the Baton Rouge Scottish Country Dancers promote the social dance tradition of Scotland: Scottish Country Dance. The group performs at various public events around Louisiana and Caledonian Society functions. The group holds weekly classes under the instruction of Lyndon Williams. Although a sub-section of the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge, the dance group is unaffiliated with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS).

Caledonian Claymore Club

Added to the Society in 2010, the Caledonian Claymore Club is affiliated with the Broadsword Academy of the Cateran Society in Portland, Maine and is dedicated to learning the sword fighting styles of the Scottish Highlanders.

Scottish Cultural Study Group

The Scottish cultural study group meets monthly and hosts topical lectures on various aspects of Scottish culture.
