Witchdoctor nabbed over HIV ... OHANGWENA - A wealthy traditional healer who rents the property of a Namibian diplomat at Omafo, has been arrested for allegedly intentionally infecting a number of women with HIV.

The traditional healer, who has a fleet of expensive cars, among them two Hummers, allegedly bedded some of his female patients who went to him to seek fertility treatment, among other remedies.

The 64-year-old Angolan national is expected to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court today on four counts of rape, four counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted rape.

He was arrested at the weekend after he was “betrayed” by one of his mistresses. The woman told police that the witchdoctor (name known to New Era) was on the rampage, raping and infecting with HIV young women who turn up at his house for medical attention.

According to Ohangwena Police Regional Commander, Commissioner Armas Shivute, yesterday the man confessed during a police interrogation that he had slept with many women whose exact number he could not remember because “they were too many”.

He also confessed that he was HIV positive and police sources claimed that he had his ARV medication pills in the police cells where he is currently being held.

The woman, in her mid-twenties, allegedly told the police that the man, who claimed he would cure her by having sex with her, infected her with HIV.

After the first sexual encounter which was supposed to be part of the medical treatment, the traditional healer allegedly asked the young woman to be his lover in exchange for a car that he promised to buy for her.

The mistress allegedly became bitter when the “doctor” bought a VW Golf FSI 2.0 and registered it in his name, instead of registering the car in her name as agreed. After the mistress reported the matter to the police, three more women came forward, claiming they were also victims.

The three were allegedly not promised any goodies but the sexual encounters between them and the "healer" were “part of the treatment”.

Another woman alleged that she escaped from the 'doctor's house after he allegedly told her the only way he could cure her was by having sex with her.

Before settling in Ohangwena Region, the man was reportedly chased away from Omutaku Village in Omusati Region by members of that community for the same practices. Apart from sleeping with women, the man is believed to be an illegal immigrant.

He has accumulated massive wealth from his clients in Namibia since 1975 as he has been coming in and out of the country before he finally settled here last year.

He has acquired a fleet of 17 vehicles that include top of the range cars such as Range Rovers, Land Cruisers, Hummers and Volkswagen. His clients reportedly include top politicians.

Sources claim that clients from all over Namibia normally flood his place and senior government officials, including parliamentarians and business people, are among his regular clients.

Apart from a big yard with a modern thatched roof that the traditional healer rents from a Namibian diplomat, he is also renting another camp in Ohangwena where he accommodates his patients. It is alleged that beautiful women are allegedly accommodated at his home at Onhuno while the rest of his clients are camped at the rented yard outside Ohangwena.

When this reporter visited the doctor’s home, a number of women were seen looking for the “doctor” while carrying big bags that could have been containing their bedding.

Shivute urged all women who fell prey to the “healer” to come forward and contact the police by calling him on 0811287355 or to visit any police station.

Shivute said information about victims would be treated confidentially.
