Shane J. Lopez ...

Shane Lopez is is an Associate Professor for the Department of Psychology and Research in Education at The University of Kansas. One of the main topics that he specializes on is positive psychology. He has published books like the "Encyclopedia of Positive Psychology" and the "Handbook of Positive Psychology". In his years as a psychologist, Lopez has studies the relationship between positive psychology and the well-being of the human. He did much research in Portugal to be able to compare it with his studies in the United States. He found that even though there were certain changes in gender and age between the two countries, the constructs remain very similar. Lopez's research resulted in two factors that significantly relate to a person's mental health: hope and curiosity. Hope can often be referred to trying to reach a certain goal which could raise the person's motivational level. Curiosity greatly influences well-being because the individual is constantly seeking knowledge and facing challenges. That leads to a level of energy and enthusiasm which a person can really benefit from. Lopez also focused on how counselors can use the factors of hope and curiosity and implant them in our society. He says that academic performance is not important if the child or adolescent is not in a state of well-being. Therefore, counselors have to be an expert at identifying and preventing problems that hinder youth's success, so that students can ultimately reveal individual goals that matter to these students.
