St.Aidan's R.C Church,Ferns.

St.Aidan's Church is a 43 year old church. The foundation stone was laid in on the 31st of January, 1974 on the Feast of St.Aidan, and offically opened by the Bishop in 1975.Four parish priests named Doyle indicate the influence of the original Danish invaders on the population of Co. Wexford, while the presence of the Norman names such as Lambert and Rossiter also reflects that County Wexford was subject to a number of invasions.

History. Before this Church was built a former Catholic Church stood at the town of the town of Ferns. But in the 1970's there seemed to be a problem with the roof of this church. the church was a good sized church. The priest along with the aprooval of the Bishop of Ferns had the Church Demolished and now a new Church stands in the centre of the town. In 2006 the new church also had a roof problem. The "pyramid-Shaped" spire, covered with slates as with the rest of the roof, had a leakage problem. But, this time the Church roof was restore with composite metal/galvenise materials. And the windows surrounding the bas of the spire were removed at the corners of the spire leaving windows in the middle of each side letting in some light in from above. The spire became a few inches shorter than originally and the large bell vent on the spire was replaced by a much smaller air tight vent. St. Aidan’s Monastery of Adoration now stands where the old Church once stood.

Items Kept from the old Church The main thing that was kept from the old church were the mass bells and the organ. The organ was built sometime before the 1900's but has had modifications since then. Not all the pipes belonging to the organ are in the new church, for unknown reasons even though theres plenty of room but everything on the organ works, it is a single manual (keyboard) but big organ. Other items include old crucifixes and brass items and possibly the tabernacle, the altar is new and has a very unique shape and design.
