Philippine Society of Animal Nutritionists, abbreviated as PhilSAN, is a Philippine professional organization established in Makati, Philippines on June 28, 1988. It is the only professional animal nutritionists organization in the Philippines.[1] The organization is generally involved with local and international animal food production.[2][3]

History edit

PhilSAN was informally organized by a small group of Filipino animal nutritionists in January 1988 and was initially conceived to be a regular gathering of animal nutritionists in an informal "breakfast club" setting. The gatherings were intended to be a venue for practicing animal nutritionists to share their experiences and expertise within the group. After several meetings, the scope of the organization was broadened and a constitution and by-laws were unanimously approved on June 28, 1988, formally organizing PhilSAN.[1] Since then, the organization holds monthly general meetings for the members and an annual conventions for members and non-members.[4]

PhilSAN Feed Reference Standards edit

In 1990, PhilSAN had published a book entitled "PhilSAN Feed Reference Standards" which, as of 2019, is in its 4th edition. The book contains 11 chapters focused primarily on animal feeding and nutrition for food production under local conditions. Commodities covered includes swine, chickens, ducks, fish, and ruminants.[1][5]

Social Responsibility edit

The organization has a scholarship program for qualified Animal Science major students of the University of the Philippines Los Baños. The organization also holds several outreach programs such as information sharing seminars for farmers, local government officials, feed millers, and students. Visits to senior home care facility Home for the Aged at Malolos, Bulacan had also been held.[1]

Conventions edit

Since 1988, the organization holds an annual convention every October, each with different themes related to animal food production. Topics are discussed by expert local and international resource speakers. The convention is open for non-members with some participants coming from different sectors.

  • 30th Annual Convention on October 5, 2017, at Conrad Manila, Manila, Philippines.[7]
  • 31st Annual Convention on October 3, 2018, at Baguio City, Philippines.[8]
