The Ethics of Space Exploration is a topic both in applied ethics and in environmental ethics. The field subdivides into two broad categories: foundational work discusses whether it is morally permissible for humans to both explore space and utilize space resources; practical work discusses what moral principles ought to be in play should we decide to explore space and utilize space resources.

Foundational Work

edit

Foundational work in the ethics of space exploration seeks to answer questions such as, "are we morally compelled to explore space?", and, "are we morally permitted to use space resources for human benefit?" Only a handful of papers have been published on the topic in philosophical journals.

Practical Work

edit

Relatively more work has been done in the arena of practical issues in space exploration.
