Typhoon Bess was the twenty-fourth named storm, the twenty-third tropical storm and the ninth typhoon of the 1974 Pacific typhoon season. The storm formed during October in the western Pacific south of Japan. It then headed further west, reaching typhoon strength before sweeping over the northern Philippines and striking Hainan Island and Vietnam. The islands of Luzon, Philippines and Hainan Island, China as well as northern Vietnam all received heavy rains from the typhoon. 26 deaths were reported (with 3 missing), and damages are estimated at $9.2 million dollars (1974 US dollars).
