A Time When I Learned to Like Something

edit

While there are many times I have learned to like something that I originally despised, the one that sticks out to me the most is when I started to like any and all aspects of the medical field. During my junior year of high school, I was randomly placed in the sports medicine class. I was very upset because I thought the class was going to be extremely boring, and I really wanted to have a free period instead. Up until this point, I was dead set on becoming a special education teacher just like my mother. Although I've always been absolutely terrible at explaining things, and never enjoyed talking in front of crowds, I was determined to work in that field no matter what it took. However, my sports medicine class completely opened my eyes to a subject and career path I never paid much attention to. My teacher, Mr. Murphy, was absolutely hilarious and always found interesting and fun ways to keep the class engaged in the topic, and help us not fall asleep. Mr. Murphy also had us shadow the athletic trainer at our school during the sports seasons and watch him tape up injuries and generally help the athletes of our school in any way they can. Ever since I learned to tape an ankle, I was hooked. Being someone who grew up playing sports with my two older brothers, resulting in many injuries, I absolutely loved being able to see a whole different side to medicine. I decided to sign up for the advanced sports medicine class for my senior year, went to the Washington State sports medicine competition and changed my major to nursing so I could help people in a more impact-full and interesting way. While by now in my sophomore year of college I have once again changed my major to physical therapy, I still am enamored with anything and everything related to medicine. I learned to like the class and the field in general by keeping an open mind and finally having a teacher who wouldn't give up on me and saw my potential in the world of medicine.
