Frans Baleni is the former General Secretary of the South African National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). He was elected as General Secretary in 2006 and re-elected in 2009 and 2012.[1] In 2012, Baleni was critized for a R 40,000 raise in his monthly salery taking it to R77,000.[2] In June 2015, he lost the re-election to the leadership position at South Africa's largest union after a decade on the job to Free State Secretary David Sipunzi.[3][4]
