Yahoo! Finance vs. Google Finance

edit

Even though Google draws far more traffic to its search engine compared to Yahoo!, Yahoo! has a significant edge on Google for their respective finance sites.[1] Yahoo! finance site was launched after its initial launch in 1994 while Google did not launch a financial site until 2006.[2] Both Yahoo and Google have revolutionized the financial industry as they have given the average investor an avenue to research, analyze, and search for stocks, shares, and other financial investments.[3]

Both websites offer similar services and have not been able to differentiate themselves from each other all that much. Both websites are also ranked very highly by financial consumers.

Yahoo!'s edge on Google Finance for monthly traffic is quite large and it draws nearly 70 million unique visitors each month compared to Google's 40.[4] Yahoo!'s finance site is focused on providing customers with easy access to financial information. Google on the other hand uses Google Finance has a part of its repertoire and considers it a part of its Google family of services.[5]

One advantage that Google Finance has on Yahoo! has that it offers more real-time data which is incredibly useful for investors but Yahoo! overall does a better job of organizing financial data according to many of its users.[6] Many users of both the financial sites have argued that both sites essentially offer the same information. The only real difference is that Yahoo! organizes its information better and makes it easy for investors to find all the necessary information they need for their investments in one place.

Yahoo! has an edge on Google Finance as a competitor. Google sees its finance site as a way to drive more ad revenue instead of focusing on providing the best services for its customers and financial investors.[7] Given the fact that Google is a lot more popular than Yahoo!'s search engine, Yahoo! needs to maintain its edge on its financial services. Yahoo! also has a nearly 10 year lead on Google as it established the site in 1994 vs. 2006 for Google. Google has a tremendous edge on Yahoo! for its search engine, mail services, maps, and other services. Google can simply continue to keep its finance site as it is and still continue to draw a huge number of visitors each month which will drive its ad revenue.[8]

Ultimately any financial investor will not be disappointed by using either one of the services. The competition for financial websites is quite intense with many sites dedicated solely to financial information, services, and analysis. The more serious investors are more likely to visit sites likes Bloomberg, CNN Money, or CNBC etc. Yahoo! and Google have done well to challenge more traditional financial websites and gain a stranglehold in the online financial services websites.[9]
