MotherMe Inc was founded in 2001 with the first doula training offered by Jeanie Greene of Richardson TX and Brenda Shumway of Dallas TX. It was founded due to the growing need for birth attendants or doulas for birth support and postpartum doula support. These trainings have helped over a hundred women realize their goal of helping others at birth.
As more and more persons have not only received their training but gone on to be certified by Doulas of North America, many trainees have reached their full potential of offering their services to the public in general. With this in mind MotherMe Inc was formed to help mothers meet trained doulas. Typically a mom will either hire a doula by recommendation or word of mouth, or a couple might contact a certifying organization like DONA and seek out doulas in their locale. This can be cumbersome with two or three doulas interviewed before finding the "right" one.
MotherMe not only assists doulas in the costs of training, even providing occasional scholarships, but they arrange meetings of several doulas with expectant parents where the parents observe the doula during en educational class. This allows couples to really hold a shorter interview initially and then further interview the doula(s) who impressed them the most.
Also, there are upcoming social support groups receiving training from MotherMe Inc. An example is the Fort Worth Dallas Birthing project.
