Jonathan Kiper, also known as "Jonny Boston" is an American restaurateur and candidate for Governor of New Hampshire.
Business career edit
Kiper was a chef in the town of Newmarket, New Hampshire until one day decided to travel abroad and learn new recipes in the hopes of opening his own restaurant. He eventually found his way to Sorrento, Victoria. There, when locals asked him where he was from, he said "New Hampshire," with most responding that they did not know where that was. When he then told them it was near Boston, he earned the moniker "Jonny Boston" [1]
Eventually, he returned to Newmarket and opened Jonny Boston's International[2] at Tenney Square, a historical building in downtown Newmarket that in the last 200 years has been used as a law office, post office, grocery store, dwelling, cigar factory, shoe repair business and saloon prior to its current role. [3]
He has earned renown for providing employment to local youth[4] as employee shortages have persisted following the COVID-19 pandemic [5]
He also wrote a children's book called "Dream Detectives" [6][7]
Earlier in life he was also a witness in the trial of childhood friend Seth Bader, a former Stratham, New Hampshire lawyer who was convicted of murdering his ex-wife in the 1990s. [8]
Political career edit
Kiper served on the Newmarket Zoning Board of Adjustment before being elected to the Newmarket Town Council in 2020, serving until 2022. [9]
In that role, he helped honor Wentworth Cheswell, a Newmarket man believed to be the first African-American elected official in America.[10][11]
In 2022, he endorsed Maggie Hassan for U.S. Senate [12]
In 2023, he announced his run for Governor in the 2024 New Hampshire gubernatorial election[13][14]
