The Bombay Royale are an Australian band formed in 2010 to play music from Bollywood movies of the 1960s and '70s. They have since moved on from playing covers of songs by artists such as R. D. Burman and Asha Bhosle to writing their own compositions in a similar style[1]. The band was founded by saxophonist Andy Williamson and features Parvyn Kaur Singh and Shourov Bhattacharya on vocals[2].
Biography edit
In their first year of performing the band had a showcase at the Australasian World Music Expo in 2010 where they played alongside Nigerian afro-beat legend Femi Kuti[3]. This paved the way for some more high-profile appearances in 2011, including Falls Festival[4] and Sakifo Music Festival in Reunion Island[5] as well as a TV appearance on Spicks and Specks[6]. In 2012 they performed at WOMADelaide and WOMAD NZ[7].
Several members of the band are also involved in other acts from Melbourne, including LABJACD, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and Illzilla[8].

Keeping with the cinematic nature of the group, the band members each have a character name taken from an imaginary film[9]:

- “Chip Chase” - Ed Fairlie (trumpet)
- “Dr Electrico” - Declan Jones (trumpet)
- “The Kung-Fu Dentist” - Ros Jones (trombone)
On the album "You Me Bullets Love" some other musicians are also credited[10]:

- "The Ecstatic Monk" - Sebastian Orellana (Latin percussion)
- The Mumbling Clairvoyant" - Willow Stahlut (violin)
- "The Bookkeeper" - Lachlan O'Donnell (violin)
- "The Octagon" - Youka Snell (violin)
This album was produced by Andy Williamson, Bob Knob and Tristan Ludowyk, the latter being a past member of the band (trumpet)[11]. Ludowyk and Knob founded the HopeStreet Recordings label which the band is signed to[12].
