Jalwana : The Millennium Village Jalwana is a village of Tehsil Malerkotla District Sangrur, Punjab in India. It is predominantly a village of Dhaliwal & Pandher Jatt Sikhs who had settled here in the late 1800s being a highly fertile land and surrounded by rich pool ofwater resources.It was rechristened as the millennium village by the Governor of Punjab His Excellency Gen.J.F.R.Jacob because of it's development as a model village.In 1999 an organization named the Village Development Council (VDC) was started under the dynamic leadership of S.G.K.Singh Dhaliwal, an IAS officer and native of this village, whose great grandfather S.Bir Singh was the first matriculate from the village and served in the revenue services of the erstwhile Patiala state. With monetary support from the diaspora who have settled in US and Canada and primarily constituting 60% of the villages population.Several projects of sustainable development have been undertaken in past 10 years and it has become an inspiration to the other villages in the entire state of Punjab as well the country.The VDC in the past 10 years has done a commendable job in the following projects 1.Street lightening covering every part of the village. 2.24 hour electric supply to all inhabitants. 3.Construction of Old Age Home 4.Consruction of theatre for educational movies for farmers and young children 5.Construction of public Gymnasium and International Standard Basketball courts 6.Laying of metalled roads throughout the village 7.Planting of 5000 saplings of Gulmohar and Silver Oak trees 8.Construction of Library , Women and Childrens Centre 9.Construction of Parapits throughout the length of the roads. 10.Maintainence of Sewage system. 11.Highest literacy in the region. 12.Construction of the state of the art Sikh temple(Gurudwara Sahib) 13. English speaking and computer training centre for women is also being run. All the current projects are sustained with the fund raising done annually by the Diaspora in US and Canada which are used to start new projects and sustain old ones.
