For his work protecting the French fleet against magnetic mines, Néel climbed the ranks in the Legion of Honor, receiving the rank of Chevalier in 1940, Officier in 1951, and Commandeur in 1959, followed by the dignities of Grand Officier in 1966 and Grand Croix in 1974. He also received civilian distinctions including Commander de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1957, the Chevalier du Mérite Social in 1963 and the Grand Croix de l'Ordre national du Mérite in 1972. His scientific awards included the Holweck Medal (1952); the Prize of the three physicists from the Department of Physics at l'Ecole Normale Supérieure (1963); [1] the CNRS Gold medal (1965); the Gold Medal from the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry (1973); and the Nobel Prize in Physics "for fundamental work and discoveries concerning antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism which have led to important applications in solid state physics" (1970).[2][3]
Starting in 2006, the European Geophysical Union began awarding the Louis Néel medal "in recognition of outstanding achievements in rock magnetism and rock physics and geomaterials".[4]
