It is administered by the Yong Peng District Council (Majlis Daerah Yong Peng (MDYP)), previously known as Eastern Batu Pahat District Council. The district council is autonomous from downtown Batu Pahat and it administers Yong Peng town and the adjacent neighbourhoods of Ayer Hitam and Tanjung Sembrong. It was established on 1 September 1979.

Dzulkefly made his debut in the 2004 general election, Public transport bus servicecontesting the Rembau parliamentary seat in Negeri Sembilan for PAS but lost. He was elected to Parliament in the 2008 general election, winning the seat of Kuala Selangor, which had been held by the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.^[1] In January 2010, he publicly supported the controversial decision of the Malaysian High Court to allow a Catholic publication to use the term "Allah".^[2]

Dzulkefly was a prominent member of the moderate, or "Erdogan" (after the Turkish politician), faction of PAS. He lost his parliamentary seat in the 2013 general election, tallying 460 votes fewer than the Barisan Nasional candidate Irmohizam Ibrahim.^[1] Despite the loss, he was re-elected to the party's central committee.^[3] In the 2018 general election, he was re-elected again to the Parliament but as an AMANAH candidate.
