Ragnar Relay Series

The Ragnar Relay Series is a set of long-distance overnight relay races that occur across the United States. Each team consists of 12 people for a normal team, or 6 people for an "ultra" team. Each of the races covers a distance of about 200 miles, along scenic areas of the country. The race typically lasts for most of two days and the night in between.

Each runner runs three legs of the relay (or six legs for an ultra team) for a total of 36 legs. Each leg usually ranges from three to eight miles in total length. Some legs require climbing or descending steep hills, while others remain relatively flat. Most of the roads that are used in the relay are paved, though some are gravel or other material. As a runner runs a given leg, other members of the team are transported by vehicle to the next exchange point.

Teams usually choose creative team names, and often wear costumes and decorate their vehicles to match.
