Sofia Cordova (born 1985, Carolina, Puerto Rico) is a multi-media artist based in Oakland, California. Her body of work includes performance, video, installation, and collage. She created the persona of [http://www.sofiacordova.com/ChuCha-Santamaria-y-Usted ChuCha Santamaria, whom she describes as a mutable and omnipresent figure based on various stereotypes of the pan-"Latin"/ Caribbean performer. Later versions of this persona have emerged as speculative figures from 1000 years in the future. Her interests include histories and experiences of colonization and assimilation, popular dance music and speculative science fiction.
Education and Residency Awards edit
Cordova received an MFA from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco California in 2010 and a BFA in Photography from St. John's University. She participated in the General Studies Program at the International Center for Photography, New York in 2006.
Cordova has been awarded many residencies including; the A+P+I residency at Mills College Art Museum (2017), Headlands Center for the Arts Residency on Climate Change (2016), Boricua Scholarship and Acre residency (2016), Arteles Neo-Future Residency, Haukijärvi, Finland (2016), Bay Area Video Coalition Residency (2016) and a Kala Fellowship Award (2014-15).
