The International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE) (in Spanish: Congreso Internacional de la Lengua Española) is a forum for reflection on the Spanish language, in which the situation, problems and challenges of the language are discussed. It is held every three years in a city in Spain or Hispanic America and its organization is in charge of the Cervantes Institute (which fulfills the functions of permanent general secretariat of the Congresses), the Royal Spanish Academy and the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language, as well as the organizing country of each edition.
Its motive is to reflect on the situation, problems and challenges of Spanish. They aim to raise awareness of the co-responsibility of governments, institutions and people in the promotion and unity of the language, understood as a backbone instrument of the Hispanic American community at all levels, in dialogue with other languages that are its living common heritage. The participants are writeres, academics, intellectuals, professionalse and experts related to linguistics, communications and Spanish.

El Congreso Internacional de la Lengua Española, de periodicidad trianual, se celebró por primera vez en 1997 en Zacatecas (México), y desde entonces se han celebrado ediciones en diversos países hispanohablantes.
The Congress, of triennial celebration (once every three years) was first celebrated in 1997 in Zacatecas, Mexico and since then editions have been held in various Spanish-speaking countries.

Despite its brief history, Congress has not been without its share of bitter disputes. At the first Congress, Gabriel García Márquez's presentation, entitled Bottle to the sea for the god of words, advocated the "retirement of spelling."
Simultaneously with the third Congress in Rosario, the Argentine Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize winner, inaugurated the LanguageS Congress (sic) (in Spanish: Congreso de laS lenguaS (sic)to demand the recovery of the memory and identity of the languages of indigenous peoples from America. On the other hand, the participation of the Rosario linguist Nélida Donni de Mirande, accused by the National University of Rosario of collaborating with the last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), was canceled.
