Cameron Murray is a fictional character from the British soap opera Emmerdale, played by Dominic Power. He made his debut screen appearance on 3 March 2011. Cameron is introduced into the serial as a love interest of established character Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb).

Casting edit

In December 2010, it was announced that former The Bill actor, Power had joined the cast of Emmerdale.[1] Ryan Love from Digital Spy said sparks will fly between Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) and Cameron and it becomes clear that they have a shared history. Debbie is unhappy to see Cameron in the village.[1] Of his character, Power said "Cameron is a strong, sharp-tongued and defiant character. He is essentially a good guy but has a darker, edgier side to him."[1] He made his debut screen appearance on 3 March 2011.[2] Power "jumped" at the chance of regular work again because he felt his training had been cut short when The Bill ended.[3]

Characterisation edit

On the serial's official website, Cameron is described as "successful manager of a haulage firm"; living the family life.[4] He was lured into a managerial role because of the money, but Cameron would much prefer to be a driver. He was content with his life Jersey, but that changed when he met Debbie. He has a liking for females with long hair, but dislikes their dads.[4] Power told Mary Comerford from TV Choice that his character is "more of a romantic than a love rat" and he will often follow his heart.[5]

Relationship with Debbie Dingle edit

Cameron arrives in the village after leaving his wife and children to be with Debbie. The pair had previously been seeing other while she stayed in Jersey.[6] Power said that Debbie "completely rocked his world" and brought him to the decision that he was not ready to be a "family man".[5] He later told a columnist from Soaplife that his character is "serious" about Debbie because he would have not left his family otherwise. Cameron is "very much in love" with Debbie and feel as though his future is with her. Power believed that Cameron was not a "love rat" and it was not an easy decision for him to leave his family behind.[6] Like Debbie; Cameron became a parent at a young age and this bonds them together.[6] The pair also share the same sense of humor, which makes them "well suited" to each other.[3] Although he was unfaithful to his wife, Power added his belief that Debbie can "definitely trust" Cameron and that they would stay together "for keeps".[6] While he secures employment within Carl King's (Tom Lister) business; Debbie's "biggest fear" is that Cameron will leave her and return to his family.[5] Webb told a writer from We Love Telly that while Cameron is a "nice guy", he also has a "darker side" which had the potential to "make things quite dramatic" for their relationship. She added that her character's father, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) does not approve of Cameron. Cain is "not pleased" because he is protective over Debbie.[7]

In May 2011, Daniel Kilkelly from Digital Spy reported that Cameron and Debbie's relationship would face problems after he flirts with Eve Jenson (Suzanne Shaw). Carl manipulates the situation and makes Debbie unsure if she can trust Cameron, the incident creates a feud between himself and Carl.[8] The scenario becomes more complicated when Debbie discovers that she is expecting Cameron's child. Webb told a writer from All About Soap that Debbie has been struggling to trust Cameron as it is and her pregnancy does not "help matters".[9] Debbie been concentrating on solving the situation between Cameron and Eve "rather than her pregnancy shock". However, Debbie's way of dealing with the situation backfires and Cameron becomes paranoid that it is Debbie who is having an affair. This forces her to tell him the truth. Webb said that he remains silent at first "which makes her think he isn't interested in being a dad".[9] Cameron is trying to come to terms with the news, just as she did and is subsequently "pleased" to become a father again. Although the actress added that "he has got a lot of convincing to do before Debbie will believe he can change and be a good father to their child."[9]

Feud with Carl

Affair with Chas Dingle edit

When Debbie becomes pregnant by her ex-boyfriend Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) to get a bone marrow donor for her sick daughter, Cameron cannot handle it. Debbie's relation, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) becomes his confidant and they grow close.[10] When Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) annoys Cameron, he is annoyed about the situation with Debbie and picks a fight with Marlon.[11] Chas then defuses their fraca and she makes Cameron talk about his issues. A spokesperson for the serial told Susan Hill of Daily Star that there is "a slight spark of chemistry" between Cameron and Chas and that as the storyline develops it becomes "very interesting".[11] Cameron keeps offloading his problems onto Chas. The pair get more acquainted and "the more time they spend together the closer they get". They eventually kiss and Chas feels guilty.[10]

Storylines edit

Cameron comes to the village after tracking Debbie down, so he can tell her that he has left his wife and kids for her. Debbie tells him that their affair was a mistake. Carl gives Cameron a job at Emmerdale Haulage and he catches the eye of Eve Jenson. Debbie finally gives into Cameron and they get back together. Debbie then asks him to move into Tug Ghyll with her and her daughter Sarah. Debbie finds out that Sarah has taken a shine to Cameron, which makes Sarah's father Andy jealous. Cameron clashes with Debbie's father, Cain. Cameron tries to persuade Cain to let him be with his daughter. Debbie learns Cameron had another affair after she left Jersey, but he tells her it meant nothing. Cameron is delighted when Debbie reveals she is pregnant. However, Debbie later suffers a miscarriage. Cameron tries to support her and not let his feelings show. His sons, Dylan and Harry, come to stay for a few days. Sarah become sick and Cameron and Debbie learn she has a rare genetic disorder. Cameron hires his own truck and starts poaching the King's customers. Carl attacks Cameron's truck and Cameron then plots to ruin the Kings. Cameron, Cain and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) steal the King's haulage trucks and sell them off. Cameron then wipes all the files containing contracts from Carl's computer. This prompts Cain to tell Cameron he is part of the Dingle clan.

Reception edit

Gemma Graham and Jon Horsley of TV Buzz quipped that "it doesn't get much classier than getting it on with your pregnant niece’s boyfriend in a pub cellar." They added that Cameron and Chas were right to feel guilty and predicted that the situation "isn't going to end well". Though the writers jumped to the couple's defence because they had attempted to ignore their feelings.[12] Kate White from Inside Soap said that she thought stealing another person's partner was wrong - but "Cameron hasn't smiled once since he met Debbie". She added that Cameron and Chas shared an "amazing chemistry", he had been "her rock" and said that Chas should take Cameron for herself.[13] Kerry Barrett from All About Soap said also felt that the affair would not end well; and branded Cameron as a "bad’un" with a "roving eye". She added that Chas fell in love with Cameron "but we’ve got a horrible feeling Cam doesn’t feel the same way. We can’t help thinking he’s a serial cheater with a penchant for a pretty face."[14] Alison Slade from TVTimes bemoaned Cameron and Chas' affair and said that they were "all over each other like cheap sunscreen - we wish they'd get a room in another village".[15]
