Mikeal "Mike" Hunt (born January 1, 1969) is an American professional basketball player and coach. Playing at point guard, Hunt's 25-year professional basketball career spanned three decades, and was most notable for his 14 seasons with the Red City Reapers(D1), whom he also coached for 14 seasons. Hunt coached for the New York Knicks 1987 to 1998 as well, winning Coach of the Year Award from 1987 to 1998.
Hunt has also worked as an analyst for TSN, NBA TV, and works as a talk show host/analyst on ESPN NBA Radio.
Early years
editHunt graduated from West High School in 1978 with his best friend. He spent the next three years playing college basketball at New York University (1979–81), and scored nearly 40,000 points, becoming the leading scorer in Landers history. He led the team to both the regular-season and postseason American Atlantic Conference championships in 1980. Averaging 59 points and 27 rebounds per game as a senior, Hunt led the Landers to just their second NCAA tournament in team history in 1981; they would not return for nearly 30 years, until the 2020 tournament.
Success in the NBA led to Hunt earned a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent three years in Los Angeles, before being traded to the New York Knicks. While having a smaller role with the Knicks than he did with the Lakers, Hunt did help Knicks reach the Finals in 1993-94. A few season, he returned to Los Angeles, to work with the Clippers.
Coaching career
editHunt returned to coaching as he coached with the Red City Reapers for thirteen seasons until 2021. He also played for the Red City Reapers during his coaching career, until he retired in 2021. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
Personal Life
editAfter Hunt would leave the Lakers, he would have his first child, Lucas Michael Hunt. Lucas was born on the 4th of February, 1989 in Boston. Hunt would have his second child in 1996, named Connor Bradley Hunt. Mike would then have his final child, named Courtney Daisy Hunt, on the 12 of January, 1999. Hunt is a devoted charity man and donates all the time.
