This is a survey of National Rail stations (including London Overground) with interchanges with the London Underground or DLR, and their coverage on Wikipedia (as of 26 January 2008). Hopefully my line abbreviations are clear. Also, I hope I haven't missed anything!

Notes

edit
  • "Shared platforms" includes the possibility that a platform which faces onto a track maintained or solely used by LUL is maintained by the NR operator/Network Rail, or vice-versa. Examples of this include Stratford and Greenford.
  • "Cross-platform interchange" means there are separately-maintained platforms which are immediately adjacent to each other. Examples of this include West Brompton and Greenwich.
  • I decided to omit Canning Town and Custom House, as there are no longer any National Rail services there (and haven't been for over a year), but decided to include New Cross and New Cross Gate.
  • "Walking-distance" interchanges where the stations concerned have different names (e.g. Fenchurch Street to Tower Hill) were deliberately omitted, whereas those with the same name were included.

Commentary

edit

Separating out the "split" articles from the table above, we have the following:

  • Balham: currently under debate here.
  • Elephant & Castle and West Hampstead: these stations are clearly totally separate--one has to leave rail property and walk some distance in order to connect between them.
  • Kings Cross St Pancras: as commented above, the complexity of this station (in that the tube station serves two distinct National Rail stations), not to mention the article sizes, means that split articles make the most sense here.
  • Euston: the tube and railway station articles were split way back in 2004 [5]. The combined article size would likely be over 30KB, so a split on the grounds of size is reasonable. However, the fact that one has to pass through the NR concourse to get to the LUL station is a possible reason for a single article. I think this is a borderline case!
  • Charing Cross: the two articles seem to have always been separate: I'm not sure of the reason for this. It could be something to do with the fact that Embankment was previously named Charing Cross until 1974, or that Embankment is still advertised as an interchange (although a walk along Villiers Street would be needed for that). There was a renaming debate in 2006 here, but this was more to do with disambiguation related to Charing Cross (Glasgow) railway station. A merged article would have size around 16KB, which is within guidelines.
  • Waterloo: this was split in a rather poorly-executed way in August 2007 [6][7], and the current situation is a bit of a mess. On Talk:Waterloo station, there are various "splits" that have been discussed in the past; these largely involved the issue of splitting off Waterloo East or Waterloo International, rather than the tube station. However, the only discussion on the talk page around August was this, which barely counts as such.

Furthermore, in the case of Paddington there was a clear consensus in favour of having a single article there.

Conclusion: in the vast majority of cases, single articles are used, even when there are no shared tracks, platforms or ticket halls. --RFBailey (talk) 01:50, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
